Fahaka and other FW Puffers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i didnt mean any disrespect, as obviously i am the newbie here and just trying to learn what i can. sorry if it came out that way.

but im sure you know what im getting at.
two people could have the same 120gal tank, one with massive rocks and gravel that may only hold 80 gallons of water...while the other has minimal deco and holds 100 gallons.

surely there is a range that is considered acceptable for Fahaka, to handle bioloads.

im grateful to have experienced keepers like you giving advice, again i meant no disrespect.

None taken. I'm sure decor (which a lot is needed to keep a puffer from getting bored) was taken into consideration, when the minimum tank size is recommended.

Ultimately as an adult a 125 or so would be the minimum tank size for this species. You must plan on OVER FILTRATION. Something that turns the water over maybe 10 times and our. Meaning for a 125 filtration that filters around 1200 gph. And regular water changes of at least 50% a week or better yet, smaller changes of about 30% twice a week. Puffers have a high metabolism which meaning they produce a lot of waste thus the required Filtration and Water Changes.
And as PufferPunk pointed out the more water in the setup the more diluted the waste will be.

what type of filtration would ya recommend?

2 x Fluval fx5?
DIY wet/dry with big pumps?

does it make a difference in the type of filtration?

thank you for your help and guidance. i am already sure that i want to keep a Fahaka, and Im willing to do what it takes to keep one successfully.

already scouting for big tanks

Keep in mind that a Fluval FX5 is capable of filtering a 300G tank, so two would be about 450% of regular. That's a little too much, even for a fahaka tank (not to mention a couple hundred dollars for that type of filtration). And yeah, no fahakas with other puffers. Not aggressive fight-wise, but just annoying with fin nipping and capable of killing large fish.

Filtration is a personal preference. Personally I don't have tanks setup for a wet/dry so I would go with an FX5 and a Aqua Clear 110 or Rena Filtstar Xp4 and a AC 110. But since you are purchasing a tank you may want to go that route.
The FX5 would be better as it filters 950 gph and the AC 110 filters 500 so with those two alone you are turning your water over 13+ times an hour.
The XP4 only filters 450 plus the AC 110 @ 500 = 7.5 times an hour. (which still isn't bad)
Plus you have to remember like you stated earlier after gravel and large rocks, your gallons of water in the tank will be less, and also remember that when manufacturers give a specified gallons for a tank this is based on the outside measurements. The true gallons for a tank are based on interior measurments. So if they say a 125 it is actually less.

My puffer tank is filtered by an Eheim 2080, an AC110 (both have purigen), a fluval 4+, and 2 Hydro 5 sponges. This tank recieves 50% WC weekly.

I have 2 AC500s & an Eheim 2217 on my 125g. My fahaka has tankmates, so I try to keep the nitrate to a minimum with 75% weekly WC .

I have been reading up on the Purigen, does the life of it last as long as they claim? What type of Puffers do you keep.

Purigen lasts quite a long time. I don't see any wear on it at all. I have a fahaka, and have had a few others in the past.
