Fahaka and other FW Puffers

Purigen is good for 3 months & then can be regenerated 3x. Not necessary for FW tanks at all though.

Anything that improves water quality has a use. Purigen removes colorants, absorbs ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Purigen can be recharged many times more than 3 times. I have recharged some of my purigen more than 20 times.

Purigen does not absorb ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. It controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds.

 You must drive your significant other crazy! Sometimes its just best to let it be...you know you dont always have to be right ;)

Anyhoo

Fahakas are my favorite puffer hands down. (Ive have never kept one but they look amazing!)

I would recommend a 150 at least for the guy. They get quite large and spending a little extra on a better tank will just save you (in enjoyability) in the long run on maintenance.

Yeah... the poor guy has a lot of patience.

i use sponge filters in my puffer tanks, and i don't think that they are as fragile as you guys make them out to be imo. i also would suggest a fine sand as a substrait instead of gravel as they love to bury them selves and their waste will sit on top of the sand in big clumps so you can just scoop it out with a net during the week then i do 25% water changes every week. my fahaka does not move around alot unless he is eating so i would say a 90 gallon would be good for a fahaka. don't get me wrong the bigger the tank the better but imo a 90 gallon would work great for 1 fahaka puffer.

my mbu is way more active and will grow larger then the fahaka so they will need a much bigger tank of at least a foot print of 72"L x 24" W. around 180 gallons or so but the bigger the better.

my mbu is another story. he is very active all of the time and is not as agressive as the fahaka. people have put mbu's in large comunity tanks with other large fish and had good luck with this. i do not suggest it. but it has been done.

IMO, a 90g with sponge filters & only 25% weekly WC just doesn't cut it if you want them to grow to full size & lifespan.

:iagree: I have 5 puffers right now (1 SAP, 1 GSP, 1 red eye , and 2 DPs all in different tanks). They need clean water - 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite and <25 ppm on the nitrate (as close as possible to this) or their health will be compromised ( I lost 1 GSP due to minispikes in my brackish- was raising the salinity slowly but couldn't stop the spikes- think the yo-yo affect of the water parameters lead to his demise:(). People complain they bring home a puffer and it won't eat. Mine all ate like pigs from the day I got them- if your water is clean, they feel better=good appetite, healthy fish.

dont know if anyone cares :p

but i bought a 125gal, bought an ac110. just have to finish the canopy, arrange the lighting setup, and get an xp4.

the little guy is in a 55gal right now, he is only about 3-3.5 inches, but eating like a pig and growing like a weed. he loves mussels, even more than the shrimp or crayfish. i guess they all have thier favorites :) he loves the sand too. i have never seen him in the sand, because he's always swimming happily around the front of the tank by the time i get over to it, but i see sand on his body so i assume he cozies up in the sand.

i clean up after him every day, (this guy is worse than a dog) and do 30% WC a week.

working double time to get the 125 ready

this is by far a better fish than i could have asked for. so much personality, and so smart.

thanks for all the help so far, and im sure i'll have more questions to come.

Great choice. I have 2 AC 500s (same as 110s I think) & a large Eheim canister on my 125g. Fahaka is about 12" with many tank mates. I do 75% weekly WC on there.
