Fahaka in a community tank

^^ +1... at that size you can catch it in a net and transfer into a bucket all still under water in the tank. Then acclimate in the bucket and repeat into the new tank. I did this with mine when I moved her from the 80g to the 220g after I had moved house.
 
My lfs has a Fahaka puffer at around 1.5-2 inches for 24$. He seems healthy but has been housed alone. Should I try him with a 3in Gar and a 4in Oscar? Is the Puffer too old to try anything with?
 
^ There is never any guarantee with puffers, its all luck of the draw, and even then as i've said before, they could be fine for years and one day decide ro turn psycho!!!
 
Homer is right there is no guarantees.. 2 inches is quite large compared to a 3 inch gar (could easily kill a thin fish) and oscars have a habit of starting fights they cannot win.
The smaller the better with fahaka and start with peaceful fish to socialist... nothing that will try and pick on him. Like you would with a puppy.. small and friendly so the fahaka doesn't think it has to compete for food or defend itself. I have a 8 month old Doberman puppy so this is very natural for me at the moment! Lol
 
Just for another data point, I got my fahaka at under 2" and it's a murder machine. I have not tried anything near his size for a while now just because it wasn't a very happy fate.
 
Just a question, does the Fahaka Puffer get more aggressive as it matures? i.e it will tolerate tankmates for a while or the second it enters all hell breaks loose? Basically how old or big was your puffer when it killed another fish?
 
^ as i mentioned before, there is no guarantee with puffers, especially since each has its own character traits...

Some maybe straight killers from the get go, while others may take years to develop those tendencies, then there are those who get lucky and find tankmates their fahaka will tolerate...

But even then, it comes down to if that will last long term or not, as they can turn psycho overnight if they feel like it...
 
Just a thought would a large schooling fish like silver dollars or tin foil barbs work better because they would be harder to single out? They also could survive a nip or so. I haven't bought anything just some thoughts.
