Fair price for electric blue jack dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends who the lfs gets them from. Most lfs are getting their EBJD from a middle-man wholesaler. Those wholesalers charge between $15-30 a piece for EBJD between .5-1". I know this because I managed a lfs for the past ten years. lfs who tranship can get them cheaper, but have to buy large quantities to do so. You are likely to find that those of us who have EBJD and bought them from a lfs paid between $30-50 a piece. That being the case, sadly, $40 is not unheard of.

I hate to drag old threads back from the grave, but this one caught my eye. I picked up 2 at about 1.5" for about $20 a piece. Now they are what I would call average specimens at about 4-4.5" What would you guys think they would sell for at that size, being average quality (they are very healthy and actually dominate the tank)?

Well the fact that they managed to get to 4 inches without dying already puts their price on a higher scale even if you think they are "average quality". I wouldn't be able to estimate exact numbers but if you're in NY, which I'm going to assume because it shows that on your location. I'm gonna say on the high end of $50+ at least... more if people want them badly.

Without proof that they are from a good breeder I would not even pay 10 dollars. 40 dollars is a huge gamble without knowing where they came from and their health status

$40 - $50 should get you a good quality blue dempsey at about 3.5" - 4"
Body shape is actually a good indication of overall health with these fish. Color, while obviously important with these fish, should not be the main factor in selecting ebjd. Color changes happen constantly with ebjd.
Look for some that look like these.
