I love how petsmart and walmart sell special fish:
petsmart-
pacus that get to 2'
snooks that get 8"
GTs that get 6"
bronze cories with a min. tank size of 1 gallon
iridescent sharks that get to 12" and can live in a 20gal tank
walmart-
special pacus that only get 10"!
iridescent sharks that get to 8"!

now if only i could find the rare dwarf aro that gets 12"..

sad part is, most people believe the little tags that give false info...

I saw a women with her child looking at oscars in Walmart. I was over hearing their conversation and heard, "You want two in your tank?" I look into her cart and to my demise i see a 20g "complete" setup. I then said, "Excuse me, oscars grow to 12" and would require a minimum of 55g for one oscar." She then replied, "Well the tag says they grow to 8" and i can have 20" of fish." I then said, "The tag is incorrect, and the 1 gallon per 1" rule shouldn't be used. Because a 10" fish wouldn't even be able to turn around in a 10g." Then a employee approached us, and she asked him, "Can two oscars live in a 20g?" The employee then says, "Yes they grow to their tank size." Then me and the employee get into a heated debate. When her daughter says, "Mommy can I get a puppy instead?" So the Mother and daughter walk off leaving the tank in the cart for the employee to put back onto the shelf. At that point, I just walked away.

Plec no offense but your line of questioning is what usually leads to even good employees becoming soured towards customers. it gets old answering such questions especially to some smart-*** who already knows the answers. educating people who want to learn is a perk of the job, answering countless meaningless questions just pisses me off.

I agree. I like helping customers-especially those who are genuinely interested and willing to take advice and learn from it. If I can tell someone is trying to be a know-it-all and test me (my favorite is butchering latin names to the point where I have no idea what they're getting at and then thinking they really stumped me) I try to blow them off as quickly as possible

Yepp i agree, if i get a customer whos trying to talk to me like that and try to sound like they know more than i know i just get annoyed or leave them. My boss had a customer like that yesterday and it was clearly annoying him.

Okay, okay. I just wanna clarify something. When i asked the lady about thr silver dollars that was an honest question. I was unsure if spotted SDs ate fewer types of plants than regular ones. It was the lady's answer that i found to be a bit dumb. When i asked the guy about the discus that was a very long time ago. I havent tested any employees in a long time. Ive just been doing my research and only asking questions if i see a fish ive never seen before, or if i cant find a certain kind of fish.

with the whole issue of the silver dollars...if you already don't trust the lfs as a source of good information why did you even bother to ask that, esp. considering it is a very specific question that many seasoned fishkeepers might not even know.

the question about the SD's was at a different lfs than the question about the discus in 10gal tank. i was also hoping that i would be getting one of the employees in the store that was knowlegeble, and not the one person in the store who doesnt seem to be all that smart when it comes to fishkeeping.

Exactly, i keep a lot of dollars of different species and only found that out for myself that way, its not somthing that everybody will know, and to be honets they will still destroy most plants anyways
