not fish but this happened today and truly shows what kind of people are in this world. guy wants a feeder mouse so i go get one well he doesn't want to pay the $2.99 for it so asks for a frozen one (cheaper) i go get that, well the size we have is too large for his snake so he gets a live.

we send them home in cardboard boxes and it's all ready to go. well he asks for a plastic bag so i get him one, and turn around to ring him up. well when i turn back around to get the money he has the mouse in the plastic bag and before a word comes out of my mouth he whirls it around and smashes it on the store counter!!!!! bag breaks, blood splatters a girl i work stands horrified and jus stairs and makes a high pitched oooo noise.

luckily only a few other customers in store, only one witnessing it. but to make matters worse this guys young son is right there watching and doesn't even flinch. that poor kid will never have respect for animals, just as his father. i finish ringing him up and m manager talks to him n tells him he just can't do that inside the store again.

but seriously? sick

We might have a little Jeffery dahmer

i just recently had an interview at my pet shop but they sell true monster set up anyway i hung around looking at the stock and talking to one of the staff there who cares about them next thing you know some 19 year old with his mum walk in and go straight to the fish section mum goes "why not get a stingray for your tank?" he then shouts "FU** OFF my oscar would freakin eat it" he was a chav(british gangster but poorer)but it didnt sound like "my oscar would kill it" it was a definet idiotic nimrod i didnt even ask him how big his tank was cos i felt like making him infertile for his dumbass comment :nutkick:justice!!! me and john (staff) were laughing to a coma as he bought 3 angelfish.
but seriously if a oscar attempted to nibble a ray im sure it would feel a bit more than quesy after that sting:ROFL:

BTW, Won't people EVER stop steryeotyping Petsmart (and "PetCo") employee's sure their are some that suck.

I worked at the co for 2.5 years. Those stores will forever be stereotyped, and its well deserving. There is no training, and the training and info they do offer is usually vague, inaccurate, and overly generalized. They have "cichlid" care sheets....isn't that a little too broad to be describing the care?

Always go into those stores expecting nothing, it makes it that much better when someone knows what they are talking about. I got that many times, and it made the job nice.

Its not the employees fault, its the company's fault for hiring them and not properly preparing them for their job. Plain and simple. But it helps if the lazy employee decides to a self learning on the internet, thats how i learned.

Personally I think of Petsmart/Petco workers like I do BestBuy workers. The guy selling you the tv knows half as much as you do, so go in educated and you'll be fine. At petsmart/petco the people working there are nice people that like animals but might not know exactly how to care for them. Asking them complicated care questions probably won't get you the proper answers. Ask them to bag you up molly and they'll be happy to do so and tell you its a cute fish in the process.

Do you people really expect intelligence at $7/hr?

On the other hand, I've talked to some very smart workers at both stores. Those are the stores I return to and support.

Whether its $7 an hour or $70 an hour, its still the stores responsibility to have well trained employees.

I've been on this website everyday since spring and I still have a ton to learn. Why would any business put that much time into a minimum wage employee that will quit in a moments notice.

Petsmart/Petco isn't your local mom and pop specialized fish store. They're a chain corporation trying to make money. They have more than 10 employees to pay at the end of the day. And not to mention, they only sell the most basic/easy to care for fish.

As a pet parent, care taker, hobbiest, whatever you want to call ourselves - its our responsibility to learn to care for our animals, not the store selling it to us.

.

When I worked for them one of the regional trainers gave a training on pet care, and during the fish part claimed that "bettas are a type of goldfish" I remember raising my hand and saying (without trying to be a smartass) "Excuse me, I believe they are labyrinth fish and not goldfish, kind of like gourami are". He then basically said I'm wrong and that they are in fact, a kind of goldfish. The guy was a moron obviously

Just remeber that the employees at these stores aren't generally idiots. If you go to walmart to buy clothes do you expect an expert tailor to be there to give you advice and answer all your questions? Even when buying cars, I often know more about the models I'm looking at the salesman. Retail employees are mostly there to help you find certain items. I think the people that go into a petco/smart and expect expert help and get mad when they don't get the answers that they want are the ones that have a screw loose.

Me: "Yes I would like 6 yellow labs please."
Employee: "Is the tank empty that they are going into?"
Me: "No, there is about 10 more mbuna fish in the same tank."
Employee: "Oh, well I can't sell these to you, they will eat everything."

Wow. People can be so retarded sometimes...

Kevin

So prevented yet another pleco/CAE from finding a home in a 10gal. Nothing but feeders fit in a ten IMO....DiskBoy 6 labs quite the pair off....Well don't you love the people that tell you BS even at some LFS,

Went to this LFS:

Me:What do I do to take the tannins out of this driftwood?
Employee:"Boil it for 20minutes it should be good"
Me:Ok thanks
(I got my Endli there but that was the last time I went because they just sit and play "Where's Waldo on Google")
