Certain Pterigoplichthys species that are called Common Plecos, along with the gibbiceps in that genus, can get amazing gigantic humongous large big type.

L021s grow 16" or so.

ok...back on track about customer stories....i had a great one in the store the other day.

five minutes before we were closing, a woman came running into the store in a hurry, looking like she had some emergency. this is the EXACT conversation i had with her:

me: hi, can i help you?
her: do you carry cockatiels?
me: no, just parakeets
her: do you ever get any tiels in?
me: no, just parakeets
her: have you ever carried tiels?
me: no, just parakeets
her: are you expecting any cockatiels?
me: no, just parakeets
her: do you have any finches?
me: no, just parakeets.

then she turned around and walked out of the store.

about the pleco thing, ive seen some HUGE sailfins for sale, they were both easily 24"

Acanthicus Adonis and Acanthicus Hystrix are both said to exceed three feet commonly.

Also, the 'Common' pleco may be any of a huge number of similar species. Go to any pet store and memorize the patterns on the common plecs, as well as the head shape. You will soon realize, as you visit other stores and as new stock comes in, that there are more than a few different species being called 'Common'.

This reminded me of this thread.
