this thread is GOLD!! lmao i read about a 6th of it and was on the floor laughing! heres a good story:

i was at walmart one day(was waiting for my mother to get her clothes and had nothing to do so i went to see the poor wally land fishes) and see this woman looking at the dempsey cichlids and malawi cichlids. she says those are pretty fish im gonna get some of both for my big tank! now it cleary says on the label DO NOT MIX! so i say it says on the label dont mix them.... besides the dempseys get really big 10+ inches! she says" no they dont... if i put them in my tank how will they do with these 1 's*points at malawi cichlids*" i say yes they do get 10+ inches it says right there*i point at label where it cleary says gets 10+ inches requires large tank* she says "why cant i mix them?" so i tell her that the malawi cichlids are mean and would stress the dempseys out since they wouldnt be able to claim a territory and ask what fish and how big her tank is. she says" i have a really big tank 10 gallons!" i have an oscar and some of those yellow fish*points at yellow labs* i then tell her the oscars gonna get to around 14-16 inches if properly kept so she says" well ive had it for over 2 years and its only 5 inches i dont think its gonna get bigger" i knew what i was dealing with b4 but now i knew just give up now while i could. to my luck the employee came over! the women then notices the parrot cichlids and says she wants all of them!! the employee says "nooo those guys are mine they're goin in my 200 gallon tank" the women says" while ill take 3 dempseys and some of these guys *points at the malawi cichlids.*" the employee then tells her she cant mix them(yes i just did have this convo with her and she seems to have forgotten it alredy!) so they go through this convo again and the women finaly says while ill just take the dempseys then. the employee go's do you have a big tank? the woman says she has a 10 gallon and the employee says "you cant keep either of those in there its waay to small." so the woman starts to get mad and says "its a fish ill do what i want with it!" and marches off. i then fell on the floor laughing and told the employee i had the same convo with her moments earlier and she starts to laugh. good times good times.

Yeah, it's nice when the store is on your side. I was at my LFS and these handicapped people came in (One was deformed and the other in a wheelchair). They had a little critter-keeper tank (the tiny plastic ones) and wanted a goldfish. The girl who worked there and I just looked at each other. We took turns trying to convince them how horrible an idea it was. In the end, they demanded the fish, and she caved. I wouldn't have done it, but I don't work there, so I couldn't stop it. I hovered as frowningly as I could, though...

I just go back from a petsmart, I was waiting as my mom was getting her haircut. Well, me and an employee duked it out... There was a tank of "Assorted SA Cichlids." I see him telling this lady that this one fish is a jd. So i walk over and tell them its a green terror. Then he got pissed and said all the fish in this tank are jack dempseys. I'm like then why the hell is their a firemouth in there too? Finally the manager comes over and starts to take the guys side. So we got into a huge arguement resulting in the customer leaving the store. So then the manager got angry at me for that. As a result i left the store giving everyone the finger. (Employees only)

way to go :headbang2

A sorta annoying story the other day when i was in at work, got a couple of ladyes around 2ish come in with there mum and children comes and asks me if i can help em.

In one of our 7x2x2 store tanks we have 3 perruno cats 12-14" long they said can those go with small fish i said no, and they said can they go in a tank this big (hand gesture looks around 2') i explain that they can reach 2-3' in legnth.

They then want to kow if they can keep these big fish as they point too which are some malawi cichlids. I said yes you can but you'll need a large tank with lots of decore, coral gravel and ocean rock as to help- maintain a high PH i could tell that they didnt really listen or care. They took me around the corner asking me just pointing to an assortment if they can mix these fish with these fish etc...

I said do you have a tank they said no they are thinking about buying one but ours are too expensive. (which was like oh thanx for the insult)

The stupidist question even people who dont keep fish should know this was

Can i mix freshwater fish with marine?

Drives me mad!

ok...back on track about customer stories....i had a great one in the store the other day.

five minutes before we were closing, a woman came running into the store in a hurry, looking like she had some emergency. this is the EXACT conversation i had with her:

me: hi, can i help you?
her: do you carry cockatiels?
me: no, just parakeets
her: do you ever get any tiels in?
me: no, just parakeets
her: have you ever carried tiels?
me: no, just parakeets
her: are you expecting any cockatiels?
me: no, just parakeets
her: do you have any finches?
me: no, just parakeets.

then she turned around and walked out of the store.

I find that there are customers so incredibly stubborn in this market, that there is only one thing that is going to convince them that I (the salesman) give trustworthy advice. And that is unfortunately to sell them a fish that will not survive or work in their tank. These customers do get multiple warnings with many reasons why what they want should not be done. I have sacrificed some guppies or goldfish to prove that selecting fish for the Aquarium is something that takes knowledge and experience. I just hope that the customers start listening (or start learning) lest all their fish die, and before they leave the hobby out of anger, disappointment, or failure.
