ok ive got a couple:

once when i was at petsmart, i noticed a family holding a bowl looking at fish. they went up to an employee and said, we want one if those! they were pointing at the bala sharks. i butted in and said that those get over a foot long. the family said oh, thanks. the employee wasnt too happy.

i called my good lfs, and unfortunately, the one employee who isnt too smart picked up the phone. i tried to be nice...:
me-do you have spotted silver dollars?
her-ummm yes i think so.
me- uh, will the spotteds eat fewer plants than regular silver dollars?
her- umm, yeah silver dollars might nibble on your plants a bit.
at this point i was about to hang up.
me- one more thing. whats the minimum tank size for discus?
i just wanted to see if she had a clue what she was talking about. i explained stuff to her next time i went there.
her- uh they get pretty big, so id say like a 29 gallon.
me- ok thanks bye.

i went to my other good lfs, and was in the sw section, looking at corals. unfortunately, one of the not so smart employees came over to me.
me- hey can you show me the mushroom corals?
employee- yeah. here they are.
he proceeded to point at every soft coral in the tank, calling it a mushroom.
me- ok thanks.
i had noticed the real mushroom corals when he was doing this,
me- hey im looking for something to eat algae. can you show me what youve got that will do the job?
employee- sure. hmm. okay, what size tank is it?
me- 30gallons.
employee- ok... hmm you could get this unicorn tang, or this horse conch, or this yellow tang, or this foxface, or these turbo snails.
me-............. ill get a turbo snail.

another time when i was at this lfs:
me- hey whats the minimum wpg a long tentacle anemone should have?
employee- how many wpg do you have?
me- 2.
employee- thats fine.
me- ok.
i left.

same lfs again. but this time just seeing how much an employee knew. it was the same one that told me i could get a unicorn tang for my saltwater tank:
me- hey can i get a single discus? theyll be fine in a 10gallon tank right?
employee- yup. here ya go.
me- thanks.
i handed the bagged discus to another employee and said i didnt want it anymore, she put it back into the tank.

interesting stories, but it seems like you're just asking questions you alread know the answer to just to see if the employee knows less than you

To be fair, subterfuge can easily uncover ignorance more quickly than honesty.

I never go into shops and ask employes questions to which i know the answer as not everybody knows everything just because as an expample they dont know what a certain species of tetra or invert is and i do doesnt make me more intelligent cos then they could ask me if i know what this coral or strain of discus is and i wouldnt know.

Just because they know less than you on a given subject doesnt mean that they are bad? cos they may know more than you about another topic.

I have to agree Bog, but I also never trust a fishstore employee just wanting to make a sale. If I ask a question. and the person helping me doesn't know the answer. instead of blowing smoke up my rear end. admitting ignorance and asking another employee for the answer, or heading over to the books and saying "lets both find out" and offering suggestions and drawing from their own experiances as a fishkeeper. I dump over 100$ a month at my regular private shop instead of at the petco or petsmart tbh. because of the honesty I get more then anything else.

I don't know everything, and I don't expect anyone else to know everything.

but there are some times you just wanna shake your head.. and either laugh or cry.

I was in Big Al's yesterday; I never buy fish there, and this was another great example of why:

> 2 tanks full of Jack Dempseys; labeled as "Jewel Cichlids"
> a tank full of Africans, labeled as "Convicts"
> a large - - 9"? - - Green Terror, beautiful condition, for $65 (sounds good, right?)
> another large Green Terror, also for $65, two tanks away; this one was clearly sick, very thin with a concave belly, probably wouldn't survive the trip home . . . and it was in a tank with a JD that was covered in a white film and blind in one eye

to be honest, when it comes to fish, I find the place friggin' depressing . . .

Just because they know less than you on a given subject doesnt mean that they are bad? cos they may know more than you about another topic.

ok, i get that... And ive realized that thr emplouee may know much more about another topic than i do. I havent been asking questions that i already know the answer to recently. Instead ive been doing my research, trying to refrain from asking questions other than, "do you have any...", etc.

Had a guy come in with a 10gal tank (that he later swore and says he has a 15gal.)

Had 3 good sized gouramis, a school of 12 tiger barbs, 6 "striped danios", 4 guppies (males / females), 2 convicts.

Originally wanted to buy one discus and said it'd be fine. He called our clown fish "nemo fish." This guy was about fourty with a kid across the room looking at birds. He settled on the electric blue lobster. My co-worker sold it to him reluctantly, and told him it'll kill all his fish and outgrow the "15gal." He said he'll have an excuse to buy a bigger tank, which he's obviously lying.

Oh well, bye all the little fish. One big happy lobster until it outgrows the tank in 3 months!

In defense of subterfuge, if someone does not know the answer to a simple question, we can assume we will need to make our own decisions in said store.

Buck, you ain't got no idea. Bless you, dude.

I recommend Valerian root LoL...
