Favorite LFS "CUSTOMER" STORIES ...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Was at my local pet store the other day -- which doubles as the only lfs in town. Every time I go in there, I check out the stock. Nothing ever spectacular. It actually used to be a nice little fish store.
Go to the african/CA/SA section and was horrified: A tank of about 5, 6 I forget what they were, probably just "assorted Africans" and spinning -- dead -- in the current. Look at the surrounding tanks -- absolute carnage. Bodies strewn all around the tanks.
From what I understand, the GM is a bit of a prick and turnover at the place is pretty frequent.

^^Agreed. But they aren't all carnivorous, or else they wouldn't take hooks baited with bread... and then have to get surgery to remove the friggin' things :irked:

But they do attack fish. I had one take a jerk bait while bass fishing.

Hopefully I'll have some good customer stories coming this way soon. I'm a stay-at-home Dad normally, but we needed some extra income so I'll start working at the local Petsmart tomorrow on evenings and weekends.

We only have one actual LFS that's worth a crud around here. Unfortunately, he's good on employees until at least the fall, and they primarily specialize in SW, which I know nothing about. Other than that, there's a Petco, a Pet Supermarket, and a Petsmart. All three are pretty good surprisingly. I chose the closest.

ok ive been reading for ever it seems haha. like 4 days but im to the end. i have a few ok ones to share.

walmart. they suck, anyway no that i have that out. i saw someone buying a 5 gallon kit, 5 glo fish, 2 oscars, a fancy fantail goldfish, and..... a male betta in a cup. i said " have you had a fish tank before?". i was told to mind my f'n business by the guy and i was like "alright, have fun"

right before christmas this little crazy kid ran thru walmart breaking stuff. way too much to list but heres the big stuff. 47 inch plasma in electronics knocked over, then he went to the fish section. this little s.o.b. took the hand soap off of the station sink and dumped it in the tanks. killed EVERYTHING. sad thing is, they never caught the kid. ugh....

a few times i went to one LFS in my town and this lady had some silver dollars that were bigger than 10 inches easy. she said they were 13 years old. idk how long they live but i figure thats pretty long for them. they looked like dinner plates. well with fish that old i figure she must know her stuff. i asked her how she cycles her tank because i had a new one i picked up and im up for a new method. she said what size is it. i told her a 15 gallon. she said feeder gold fish. she proceeded to try to sell me 30 good size feeders to "get the water dirty." i told her that im not stupid and she shouldnt try to force a sale based on the assumption that im stupid. i told her i would just use seeded media and do it the same old way i always have. (thanks knifegill) because of that i dont shop there anymore. she is rude anyway. one of those people that tell customers they close whenever she feels like it when they ask.

another local store tried to sell me two iridescent sharks, a banjo catfish, and three balloon mollies when i asked him for stocking suggestions for a 5 gallon. i was like um how about these ghost shrimp.

petsmart. oh lord. ive had my pleco dropped and stepped on. (last one too) :( when i looked rather upset not only that she had just stepped on my fish, but also that there were no more to choose from. she asked me if i still wanted the one she stepped on and said "it still comes with our 14 day guarantee"

i watched a asian gar (needle fish) poke a hole thru the bag it was in and squirt the employee in the eye with tank water while she was reading the number off the bag at the register. she proceeded to throw it in the trash, with the fish still in it, and page the fish guy to bag another one. i told the manager and they said they cant put it in their tanks again because it touched the trash can. i took it home for free, they were like $19. he is doin just fine:)

another time the goldfish and rosy feeders where spinning around in the tank rapidly, all dead and or dieing. waaaayyyy overstocked. i know they move feeders but no reason to have over 500 large goldfish in a tank less than 30 gallons. i asked what happened and the heaters were broken. i was like goldfish dont need heaters, she just nodded and walked away.:screwy: they ended up loosing the whole stock.

a guy came in and bought 4 oscars, 4 jds, 2 convicts, 4 pacu, 3 plecos and two $30 blue ahli cichlids. also several very big and expensive $50 to $75 decorations so i knew it was at least a decent sized tank. i had to ask him. hey what size tank you got. he replied that this was his first tank and he just got a 75 gallon bowfront and he hadnt even filled it up with water yet. after the fish were bagged he started asking if he needed gravel. i walked away before i bashed in his skull. :irked:

i have many more but i already typed enough. god people should have to show proof of IQ test results before they are allowed to purchase pets. even an ant farm.

There are alot of Crazy (and some hard to believe) stories there mate....Get this a customer comes in with this bag of fish water I'm thinking oh no dead fish love that....She goes back to fish, and when she gets around to me she shows me a bag with a cucumber slice with Dozens of little swimming critters that I knew were a Daphnia sp. so I told them that later they got a General Cure I told them they wouldn't need it as the daphnia wont hurt the fish and the fish will probably eat some....

If they really wanted it out of their tank CuSO4 would do....But they'd have to take out the Cloan Loach....
(TBH only reason I knew they were Daphnia is that's what I feed My Afro)

WOW! Some crazy fish stories!!!! Here's a recent one when I purchased my flagtails to another customer...
empolyee: hi sir can I help you?
customer, yes I just filled up my 20 gallon tank what can I put in it?
empolyee: hmm... an oscar, and a pleco, and some tetras would like nice.
customer: sure I'll do that.
empolyee: they'll do fine. all for 15 dollars.
I was like ahaaa....
