Obese does not always mean you will see fat rolls, but can be hidden and occur as high fat levels surrounding the organs. The animal/person may not appear to be fat, but the amount of fat stressing the organs is a problem.

Obesity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse affect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy.[1][2] Body mass index (BMI), which compares weight and height, is used to define a person as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2 and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.[3]

Before getting a pet, any pet (or child, for that matter), it's probably a good idea to find out what they eat in their natural environment and try and simulate that as close as possible.

LOL  Seriously, if only some of these people would spend as much time looking into into what children need before they decided to squeeze one out as we do asking about our fishies feeding habits. :screwy:

I don't have any pictures but I have personally seen goldfish, and a few other "slow" swimming or active fish that where obese by most deffinitions of obesity. fat deposits in particular along the spine giveing at first impression the look of alot of muscle unless you where to actually poke the "pudge" Most species are simply to active imo to show the typical "fatness" of obesity but It would be interesting to see biopsies of powerfed fish vs "malnourished" or "normal" fed fish. however you want to put it.

frequency of feeds plays a very large part in how any animal eats. as some digestive tacts are designed to handle huge "gorges and starves" better then others. Like Lions for instance will gorge themselves much as cat-fish do. Where I to feed my horses in such a matter, I'de have a dead horse in a matter of weeks if not day. as either he would colic or founder from such a nutrient overload.

So the answer is there is no answer :ROFL:As each fish species is different.

But then again lions don't binge eat daily.. they go threw starves, as do most other species with similar feeding habits. So unless someone where to study and follow the feeding habits of each individual fish species. At best feeding will be a guessing game.

I feed everything in my main tank basically as much as it can eat when i feed. The thing is i only feed that tank 3 days a week: monday, wednesday, and friday. It takes quite a bit of food to make sure everything gets food so the more aggressive things eat more. Everything in there is not skinny but i don't believe they're fat either, and by god are they hungry come mondays :). I do this for a few reasons. I don't think most fish will everyday in nature but when they do they probably eat as much as they can. It gives them time to digest and somewhat empty their stomachs. I feel that it is better for my water quality. And finally, it just takes a while to thaw and cut up a pound or so of whatever i'm feeding :D. Mind you this is only the big, main/show tank.

My growouts and other stock are a different story. MY growouts i feed a little bit, multiple times a day, some days being 5 or 6 times. those tanks are also massively over filtered and get daily waterchanges. Then there is some stock that just requires daily feeding so that's another story. ;)

Just my opinion, could be way off but it works great for me.

over feeding your fish is going to diminish your water quality also. Making your job to take care of the fish just that little more demanding....

dingo it hard not to over feed a barra when they eat all the food u put in for everyone when mine was 12in i put 20 2 inch feed goldfish for him and the 3 leis he raced around and eat all 20 in under a minute :) freaked the leis out in the prosess to lol

True that ad furthermore diminished water quality = less healthy fish and its pretty safe to assume less growth in bad water. :)
