Feeding?

Definitely not enough room. I found an fx5 on craigslist for 120$ I could prob talk him down to $100. Is that a good deal? They are upwards of 300$ new. He had it running in a saltwater tank, does that matter?

ya 120 on an FX5 is great, wash out really well, add meadia, you will probably need new filter pads but those are simple to get off amazon, that will be good for the 180

Get the fx5 they are great! And that is a steal! Do you have heater covers to keep your rays from getting burned? Just trying to think of all the newbie mistakes to help save headaches.

Where is here Mr. Biggles? He had a bunch of stuff listed, good stuff, he wanted $600 for it all, including a 75 gallon tank. I asked him about just the filter, he said 120. I just asked him about taking $100 we'll see if he bites.

And it's on my list anyway so if it will help my rays now, and I can get it cheap, win win.

Regarding heater, yes, bought a heater with a guard. When I (newbie alert) did a water change and let the water drop below my still on heater and it exploded, pre rays. Instantly killed a mickey mouse fish too.

Hopefully I can grab the fx5. Wish I knew enough to know that it is in great condition, but will just have to trust him I suppose.

Will the fx5 run the 180 on its own? Would like to be able to keep the small tank going, possibly even make a saltwater tank.

Most ray keepers ( including myself) like the 10x turn over rate of the filter, sump or what have you. For my old 180gal tank, I ran 3x FX5's with all media in the 9 trays with weekly water changes of 50%.

So, I would keep the current filters on your 180gal and just add the FX5 to the current tank.

Ok, params this morning are the same as yesterday. Just Nitrites super high. From my research I think my tank is going through the nitrite phase of the cycle, right? Ammonia has cycled and leveled out, now Nitrites turn. But I read that this is the longest cycle, and that it can last up to three weeks?! Can my babies safely make it that long? I've been doing 50% water changes daily, with the exception of the day our mains broke. It's not helping. Will the salt keep them safe? I am truly working in adding a canister filter. Craigslist dude hasn't replied yet.

Are there any other good canister filters I can grab that aren't as expensive as the fx5?

I keep reading about sponge filters, the LFS used them in almost every tank. Would a couple of those help?

They are still eating and pooping great. Active and getting fatter.

Sorry for the nine thousand questions daily, I read all day about them, but nothing beats first hand advice from those with first hand experience.

I doubt it'll be 3 weeks but I do feel based on my experience that the nitrite bacteria are slower at reproducing.

Just spend the extra $20 on the FX5, you won't get another canister that big for $120. Sponges aren't gonna cycle fast enough to make a dent (and even the FX5 will have to cycle so the sooner you get it the better (but there are ways to speed that up)).

I'd do 2x50% changes today and see where that gets you. Since they're eating well now you could also cut back slightly on the feeding, which will reduce the waste and give the filters less catching up to do.

And yes, with Nitrite that high I suspect they'd already be gone without the salt. It's working.
