Feeding?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My advice if they aren't dead yet, take them back to the store or sell them. do your research first, then at a later date you can try keeping rays..
Sorry if this sounds like a rant , LFS that sell rays to uninformed , well intention-ed customers just rile me up..GL

Cut back less on feeding, like 2x a day instead of three? They are seeming like they want more not less lol.

I was having to take each worm piece in the tube I use for feeding and drop in front of them. With the little guy I'd actually have to lift his lip up and then he'd take it. Today when I came to the tank, they both came to me, and I said what the hell, dumped 2 cut up worms in there, used the tube to just keep the worms from floating away in the current, and both of them hunted them down and devoured them. In like 45 seconds. Best feeding ever. I started to give them some more. But didn't.

They are definitely getting fatter, but not where they should be, I still see ribs.

I don't even want to introduce shrimp and fish til i get em fattened up.

If this guy would answer me, I'll def. Buy it for 120. But he hasn't responded yet:(

No they aren't dead yet, but they surely will be of I take them back to the store.

I appreciate your anger, I was a bit upset that he gave me a ton of wrong info.

However, that being said, in the one week I have owned them, they have become part of the family. I LOVE them lol. I am doing everything possible to learn and educate myself and to keep them healthy, and thanks to some awesome members here, they are doing great. I don't think they are in danger of dying, and I think I am doing a great job of taking care of them, for an uninformed, misinformed newbie who definitely rushed into this purchase. That being said, the LFS guy and I did talk regularly for over a month on the care for them before I bought them, he just told me all wrong.

But thanks for your input, and don't take this wrong, but they are staying. They were in bad shape when I got them, and I have made awesome progress with them.

I found local blackworms, but they are loving nightcrawlers, so I am going to stick with those until we move on to shrimp and fish.

Just spend the extra $20 on the FX5, you won't get another canister that big for $120. Sponges aren't gonna cycle fast enough to make a dent (and even the FX5 will have to cycle so the sooner you get it the better (but there are ways to speed that up)).

How about a fluval 306 canister filter for $110? Good or no? Trying to find something today, if not ill go drop the extra cash on a new one.

NP , hope you move them to the 180 soon...its just a shame people look to an LFS to be informed. but most of these shops are run by people with no knowledge , just driven to sell you products ...I heard an LFS by me try to sell a small motoro to a guy with a 55 saying he would be OK and here is the flake food he needs.....if you rays are doing fine ,stable getting fat and healthy you may want to do some research and de worm them..GL to you

I think that white filter is - or is like - the SunSun filters I *think* I've seen people appear to be happy with. I have no experience with them whatsoever. I know even less about the Cascade filters.

And yes like 2x instead of 3x. They're eating so starvation is not what would kill them right now, poor water quality is and te more they eat the more they contribute to the poor water quality.

Rays don't have ribs and from what I can make out of the pictures yours aren't starved - their tails are decently thick and there no obvious signs of what people call "hip bones" (which are not bones of course). Sure they come to you but just as you wouldn't feed a puppy 6x a day or a kid candy all day, you have to be the adult in the situation and restrict their food while the tank is still cycling.

What would I do without you Mr. Lockwood? You r the best, and so patient with my uninformed self.

Did a 50% change. Gonna do another this evening.

Glad you think they don't look skinny lol. I know the don't have ribs, with no bones that'd be hard lol, but they look like ribs. Maybe normal? I will def. Cut the feeding down. And think I'm just gonna go buy a new fx5 in a few. I need it and don't wanna wait for shipping so I'll just buy it.
