Feeding?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rays are one of the best fish to keep they are amazing but do take allot of work money and effort. Keep up what your doing with them and work on finding another filter asap, you need to just keep working at it. Wish I was local I would loan you one and this you some media to jump start everything. Keep working at it, I'm hoping the best for your little rays.

Thanks didysis, you have been a huge help. I am trying to get another filter, was hoping to get one today, but couldn't make it out there :( They are really doing great, I truly think all I need is another filter and all will be good. I have to make it happen tomorrow no matter what.

I don't mind the time, or the expense. Me and hubby refer to them as "the babies" when talking about them. Wouldn't be any less time consuming or expensive than of we had bought a puppy, but way cooler ;)

I tried to convince the hubby to turn our basement into a fish room, but he wouldn't go for it. Maybe if I try to sell it as a fish room/man cave he will go for it. Throw a big screen and a ps3 down there with the other walls full of fish. Win/win lol.

Funny cuz he's been the fish guy our whole relationship. He's had Oscars, eels, Columbian sharks, catfish, etc. But we never had to do anything special really. Regular tank and filter setup. The Oscar even survived my then 1 1/2 yr. Old son pouring Listerine and black pepper (two separate incidences lol) into their tank.

This is a whole new undertaking, but they are special. And for the first time, I have an attachment to the inhabitants of my tank lol. It has stirred something inside lol now I just want more tanks and more fish. But first things first.

Ok guys, I'm way overdue for an update. Had a busy weekend, was my youngest child's 3rd birthday.

So been doing 50% wc daily. Parameters still same.

Ph 7.4
Nitrites high.. 5 ppm
Ammonia tinge over 0
Nitrates 20 ppm

I have an fx5 on its way, will arrive tomorrow. Now I need some help on how to jump start its cycle.

Also, I cut feedings to twice daily. But since doing that, my bigger ray has eaten 3 tank mates, 2 Molly's and a mickey mouse. Not upset about it, but wondering if he's doing that because they need fed more. Currently the bigger one eats 2 nightcrawlers 2x a day, the little guy eats 1 worm 2x a day. I did just buy a bunch of market shrimp, gonna start introducing them today, and see how it goes. I keep looking for garlic guard, haven't found it local yet, but I just learned about a lfs I hadn't known about before, and I am gonna go check it out today.

So, any advice for me guys? Especially about the fx5, I know it was mentioned thAT there is a way to jumpstart the cycle. And feeding, I don't want to overfeed so I don't add more bioload to my filtration, but it seems to me that if they are picking off fish, they have to be hungry, and I don't know if that's good or bad.

The picking off fish is a good thing IMO - a hungry ray is 100x better than one that won't eat. My rays would eat 5x a day if I let them but it doesn't mean they need to. When the weather gets rough I don't feed them for a few days in case there's a power outage and they're just fine. Your guys will be fine eating 2x a day.

For the FX5 I'd take some of the media from the AC and place it into the canister somewhere where it can touch the FC5 media.

What's the garlic guard for?

I got advice to soak the shrimp in it to get the rays to eat the shrimp? Think it's not necessary?

Nah. Not unless the worms they're currently eating are laced with garlic

Chop some shrimp, marinate with some chopped worm for an hour or two. Try the shrimp first, if they don't take it remove it and give 'em the chopped worm instead. Patience is key, some rays take weeks to get it.

Nope lol no garlic laced worms. Unless the worm getter picked worms from a bed of garlic? ;)

I will try with tonight's feeding. In the middle of a mega water change now. Meant to do 50% but ended up more like 75. I rinsed that stupid foam in a bucket of tank water. Do I really need to put it back? When I pulled it out, there was a ton of poop and yuck behind it, hence the bigger water change. I feel like it is obstructing the filter intake.

I know it now has beneficial bacteria on it, can I toss it in the upper part if the filter? I hate it lol, it's ugly and its making
Messes.

Awesome, done, thanks. One more question. My tap water's ph has risen to 8.4. My tanks oh is sitting between 7.2-7.4 after wc. Usually is 7.4, tap is usually 7.4-7.6. Any clue to why the ph in my tap is higher than usual? And will this effect my tank? Nitrites are still just as high after all these wc. Salt must be working cuz my rays seem very healthy and active. I think it may be affecting my.mickey mouse cuz he is staying in the lower levels. (Which is going to make him food very quickly) the few remaining other fish(Tetras) don't seem to be bothered.

I just can't wait to get the new filter set up, I know it will make a world of difference.
