wow. to OP.. tons of really helpful advice here from many decent members.. I think you will have learnt a lot through this experience.

if your playing catch up with cycling tank... then I STRONGLY recommend seachum stability.
this cycles tank really quickly. .. I used it on my new tank ages ago.... and I started adding fish on day one...
most of my canisters BB died as it took me ages to set up the tank. so I cleaned out my filters. .. hooked them all up.. added seachum stability and moved my fish across.

I know, these guys are awesome. I am quite sure I can attribute my rays good health solely to them.

I actually bought a bottle of stability today, when I bought the media for the fx5 that didn't come. Was gonna ask Mr. Lockwood what his opinion was before I added it.

Mr. Lockwood, have I told you how amazing you are lately? If not, well, you are simply amazing. I am gonna email him right now. Hopefully he still has it. I don't know how I missed it, I have been checking craigslist multiple times daily. It's about an hour and a half away, but if the price is right, I'm all on it. Per above poster, what is your opinion on seachem stability?

I've never used it although I have seen people say it works. I would assume the bacteria need time to attach to filter media so if you're going to use it, I would probably wait until you have another filter on the tank and add it then right after a water change. With your current water change regime I would suspect you'd end up throwing half the bacteria down the drain because you'd have to change water again so soon.

Pure speculation since, as I say, I've never used it.

Amazon has em of course. I have free 2 day so if you get desperate and can PayPal me up front I don't mind ordering one.

Thanks, I actually am a prime member as well. I just ordered it. It'll be here Thursday.

I'll use the 50$ card petco card to buy any media I forgot. From what I was told, it spent come with anything, right? I was also told I would have a problem with it sucking up my sand because of its power, do you think I will have an issue?

I know I bought carbon today, and thus big ole thing of these grayish white rock looking things. Anything else I need? I was scared to ask the store peeps too many questions lol - boy Mr. Lockwood you are lucky I don't have your cell number, I would be texting you at least once an hour with questions!

He hasn't replied, so I just bought a new.one off of amazon. Least that way I know it works, and it should come with a warranty.

Get your $$ back on the carbon it's not really any use except to remove meds. Yes good chance of sand being sucked up. Maybe just keep the intake high off the floor.

Will do, I thought I read that it wasn't necessary. But...I'm a sucker when the sales peeps tell me I need something. I just buy lol.

Anything important for the filter I need? There's so much media for sale for it that I am overwhelmed. I dunno what's important and what's not.

Side note, rays hate shrimp. Gonna keep trying every feeding though. I gave them a ghost shrimp treat today, they thoroughly enjoyed it :)

You could probably load up the top 2 levels with plastic pot scrubbers

View attachment 885890

and then in the bottom level put the ceramic media. Other than that all you need is the fitted sponges for the outsides. I think those sponges come with the filter don't they? Not sure, never purchased an FX5 new.

Those look like I could find em at the dollar store? Regular plastic pot scrubbers? Got ya, will find em today. I am pretty sure it comes with the sponges, but the description wasnt very thorough, there wasn't a "whats in the box" list or anything.
