It hasn't been 24 hours, the filter will take time to cycle. If the old media isn't touching the new media, I would ensure that it does as I suspect the bacteria will have an easier life colonizing something it can more easily spread to.
I can tell you for certain that if you continue doing large water changes to keep the nitrite at least semi-under-control, the filter will complete the cycle and the tank will stabilize.
I cannot tell you what will happen if you do smaller water changes. Perhaps the rays will be fine, perhaps they won't. It's not a risk I'd take.

Rays can get a little aggressive at feeding time which is good, means they are active eaters. And for the.fx5 the intake and return should both be under water, my intake is about 6 inches off the bottom and return about 6 inches from the top.
