Feeding?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could try watering down tank water for the nitrite test, maybe 1/4 tank water and 3/4 tap (maybe measure using the Prime dropper or something) and take another reading. At some point you'd expect to get a reading that gives a sensible number on the scale and then you'd know the actual number.

The "feed what your fish'll eat in 2 minutes" nonsense is especially irrelevant with rays. My most voracious rays finish in a matter of seconds and I already wonder if they're over-fed. I wouldn't increase the feeding until the levels are fixed.

Well, I did that... Still super purple. Ugh. I don't know what to do. I won't feed em anymore. I have a bigger problem on my hands lol.

Have you tested the tap water for nitrites? If it says 0 then your test kit is probably not the issue. My question is are they fat yet? If they look like this Guy more or less they can go a day or two without food and try testing at the end of that one day fast period and see if the water is any better. View attachment 888312

I love your ray. Beautiful. I found your build thread and have been reading it like a book lol. You have an amazing set up and some beautiful creatures.

Duh on me. Yep tap reads 0. Glad I didn't buy a new test kit today lol. Sometimes the simple things just don't occur to me lol. They look fat compared to what they looked like when I first got em. Lemme see if I can get some good pics.

Okay maybe later for pics, they aren't cooperating lol.

How hard is it to do the water changes? Are you in 5 gallon bucket mode? TBH if this was my tank and rays I'd change almost all the water out.

Oh Pete it's almost as if you read my mind ;) Yes, I'm in 5 gallon bucket mode. I fill two at a time n dump. To refill I have to go all the way upstairs, so I can only carry one at a time back. It's hard, but I've gotten quite used to it.

What'd funny is just this morning I went to home depot and bought an adaptor and a new hose to try and run it from the kitchen. However, the piece I bought is too damn big for the faucet. So I did it with the bucket until tomorrow when I can get back to home depot n exchange it for a smaller one.

So you think I should do what? Put the rays in a bucket of tank water n drain the tank n refill? I could get it done in an hour or so. Quicker if I can find a piece that fits on my faucet. I don't wanna hurt them. But if you think that's what I should do, I'll definitely do it.

The trouble with reading this site all day is some people don't know their @ss from their elbow and shouldn't be giving advice on stuff they don't understand.

Best quote ever.

That's good stuff, but I don't think there's many of us here that would file you in that cabinet Pete. ;)

Not quite that drastic. Leave the rays in, drain the tank down 'til there's a few inches, refill. Don't forget the dechlor. Don't forget to replace the salt. Don't forget not to blow up your heaters.

If 1/4 of your nitrite is still over 5ppm, you have at least 20ppm and that's just nutso.

I literally lol'd. You know me so well already. Bet ya I woulda forgot the heater....again. Thanks for the reminder lol.

Answer me another question and save me the hassle of looking it up in the bible sized instruction manual. I haven't been turning the fx5 off during wc's. I haven't took the water level low enough to need to. This time I will. When I unplug it, is there anything else I need to do? Don't wanna screw anything else up :)

Nothing else.

I have a whole tank on a power strip. Flip the switch and everything goes off. Flip it again and it's all back on. I've forgotten to plug heaters back in in the past, which a power strip also remedies.

Lmao my whole tank is on a power strip too. Never occurred to me to just flip the switch on the darn power strip. Boy I can't believe I publicly admit how slow I can be sometimes. And often too. I'm gonna do the tank drain tomorrow. My kids come home soon and there's just no way to accomplish that with them hovering over me. Plus I'd rather have the sink adaptor to help with the huge refill.
