Feeding?

Ok... My Nitrites are still sky high. I am completely at my wits end right now. Even at only 1/4 tank to 3/4 tap its still purple.

What the heck is causing this huge nitrite factory in my tank???? The fx5 has been running for 6 days. I have put 5 days doses of stability in the tank to try and get it to fully cycle. I do wc constantly. Something has to be the root of this problem. Ammonia is 0 nitrates are 0. Yes 0. Is that normal for nitrates, or just cause I just did a massive wc? Ph is a steady 7.4-7.6.

What the heck am I missing? I sifted through the sand. I'm starting to get frustrated now :(

Pete I have been obsessively hitting the refresh button waiting on your wisdom ;).

Are you getting hit by the winter storm in your area as well? I may forgive you for leaving me hanging if you are out buying toilet paper and bread in case you get snowed in. Jk, we are expecting 6-8 inches where I live, but it hasn't even flurried yet.

I have been researching my butt off in the meantime. Without much luck. Do you think I should ask a LFS if I can have some super established media and toss that in the fx5 as well? Since my other filters never fully cycled, maybe the.media from them wasn't enough?

Just brainstorming. Need input lol.

Wish I was local I would loan you a ton of fully good to go media, just removed a tank worth from my sump last night moving stuff around. Sorry I never have high nitrites so don't have much first hand know on what to do about them, I am always high on nitrates as they are the final product from waste.

Been workin' - I do have a real job too..

Can you dilute the tank water down to the point where you actually get a sensible reading?

I actually did (usingthe cap from the test tube) 1 cap of tank to 7 caps of tap. It was way more than 5mls more like 9. I still only used 5 drops. So I dunno if it was accurate. That gave me a reading of about 1.0.

Did you have a good day at work ?
You know I just like messing with ya :).

You are so sweet. I wish you lived closer too, I think that's what I need. Do you think. LFS would give me some, or let me buy some? And would it even help given the bioload of the rays?

I guess I'd do the dilution, shake it up, empty down to the line and test. But if your test worked and you're now at 8-10ppm I'd do another big change tomorrow and see where it's at.

If you left 10 gals behind and the FX5 holds another 5 you diluted the water to about 15% so if you're at 10ppm now maybe you get to a readable number with another big change.

Sure, if an LFS will sell/give you media, take it.
