Well this thread was a fun read....I am glad for once some little retics made it to a home that actually cares. I personally can not believe the cost you paid for these little guys for starters holy moley and I have had guys give me a hard time for selling captive bred retics for $80, that are eating like pigs when they are 4 days old and never stop! Retics are probably the least cared for rays in the hobby, however they are one of my favorites I love their personalities. They were my first rays and I still have my first initial 2. My female is now 14 inches and my male about 10 inches. And so far as of today they have given me 8 wonderful litters of pups. You said your rays are around 6 inches if I read correctly which would probably put them at about 6-8 months old if I had to guess. Definitely need to invest in a "python" water changer it will be the best investment in fish keeping you will make besides your great FX5 you just got. And definitely the sooner on that 180 the better. And just FYI retics due to their long tails can out grow even a 180 I can't imagine my big female retic in a 180 with tail she is 21 inches nose to tail and she is missing almost half her tail. These animals create huge bio loads if you haven't already figured out LOL so the bigger that tank the more water the less chance of all your parameters going crazy.

I say get the 180 up and going! Alot less headaches and more sleep!

Large water changes are so nice, I have two hoses for my smaller tanks and have one drain and one fill all at the same time for less stress on the fish and it sure is nice to just let it got for a good while. But also with your setup right now it will be nice to get that much water out and replace it.

Iu se a large Rio pump something like 500 gph. Or gravity drain. Pump the water into my sink or toilet or outside to the garden. I hate using the faucet attachment. Just wastes so much water.

I love these Lil rays. I wouldn't care what species they were lol. I am so sure 180 will be a temp home, but I already own one, so that will be its next home. It'll give me a few months to save up for a permanent home tank for them. I'll have to look into this python I keep reading about. See my hubby was always the fish guy. All I ever had to do was feed them. This is the first time I really got interested and I have learned an immense amount in such a short time. It's such fun though and just watching my little babies is so relaxing. I spend far more time a day than I should just watching them lol.

Yes! It was very rough for me to carry 9-10 5 gal buckets of water downstairs and then lift them up over my shoulder to pour em in. This was a BREEZE!

I have a feeling your tank is oh probably like 8 times bigger than mine lol. As nice as that sounds, something like that will probably only be worth it when I have a much bigger tank.
