Feeding?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I usually go by Pete.

They're easy to set up but I seem to recall there being an accompanying DVD.

Well, Pete, thanks lol. Since we are on a first name basis, I'm Samantha :) it hasn't arrived yet :( patiently (impatiently) waiting still. Dvd or no.DVD, my day wouldn't seem right if I didn't ask you at least 1 question ;)

Well, you'd be proud of me. Got it all hooked up and running. Yay me ! This filter is a monster! I wasn't expecting it to be quite that big. In the media trays I did top-media from ac110, middle- scrubbies, bottom, ceramic media. Sound right? It lowered my water level like an inch so I'm gonna fill it and add some stability while I'm at it. Hopefully this filter cycles fast and I can slow down on the wc. Although, I am getting quite a bit of exercise.

Rays are still happy, healthy, eating well, although they still want no parts of shrimp.

And today marks 2 weeks since I have had them! Made it further than I am sure many would have guessed given my total lack of experience.

Sounds great, Congrats on the new filter, when I got my first I was amazed at the size myself as well.

So.... My Nitrites are still high. I'm wondering, should I do smaller wc's? I read so much conflicting info it drives me crazy. I have been doing at least 50% daily (have missed 2-3days since starting)

They are still active and eating well, but I feel like the high Nitrites could be causing long term damage...like one day they will go from great to not so good.

A lot of what I read says 20-25% changes daily. Some say 10-20 twice daily. I just don't want to add so much new water that my tank never gets a chance to cycle right.

Am I overthinking this?

It hasn't been 24 hours, the filter will take time to cycle. If the old media isn't touching the new media, I would ensure that it does as I suspect the bacteria will have an easier life colonizing something it can more easily spread to.

I can tell you for certain that if you continue doing large water changes to keep the nitrite at least semi-under-control, the filter will complete the cycle and the tank will stabilize.

I cannot tell you what will happen if you do smaller water changes. Perhaps the rays will be fine, perhaps they won't. It's not a risk I'd take.

Yes, probably.

Should I put it with the scrubbers or the ceramic. I put it in its own tray :( or some scrubber and some ceramic and old media all in the middle one? Does order matter? See, I told you I overthink things lol

Order probably matters some, the ceramic on the bottom because the bottom is cleanest (I think I remember reading this somewhere). Put it with the scrubbers.

Bacteria takes time to grow..

Ok one more question...is it ok if the return nozzles are submerged? They are like an inch underwater.

Ok two questions... Is it normal for them to fight? I mean they aren't too rough, not causing injuries or anything, but they fight, especially at feeding time.

Rays can get a little aggressive at feeding time which is good, means they are active eaters. And for the.fx5 the intake and return should both be under water, my intake is about 6 inches off the bottom and return about 6 inches from the top.

Okay, just wanted to be sure I did it right. I mean intake I knew for sure lol. It's about 3 inches from bottom, but gonna move it up some cause its sucking up to much sand. Return is only an inch or so from top of water, but I would think that's sufficient.

Thanks for the help, as always!
