Feral jaguars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This pair of managuensis were caught on hook and line in one of the many semi-brackish/brackish canals here in Singapore. They both seem to have an unusual head profile, which is more pronounced in the male, which makes them look very predatory, to me at least. I like. Do you?

If you like them then why do you care if they are hybrids? Just enjoy the fish. If you are keeping fish for enjoyment then just enjoy the fish and dont dwell on the fact that they MAY be hybrids.

Those two are 100% Parachromis managuense. I've kept a dozen or so jags over the years and have had thousands of fry. I have also kept every other species of Parachromis together. I am POSITIVE they are pure jaguar. I have no idea where people are getting dovii pattern from?

OP should name him Benjamin Bueford Blue, lol. I was born with big gums sir. Well you better tuck that in, gonna get that caught on a tripwire.

A little off topic, but why can't you stand hybrids? I've just never really understood the stigma on hybrids within the world of fish keeping, its not like our captive populations affect wild ones. Would you all of a sudden dislike the fish if they were some how proven to be hybrids?

I'm a purist, I suppose. I don't like the idea of "playing God" and creating something completely unnatural and artificial. Despite being Asian myself I can't stand flowerhorns and practices like dyeing fish which all seemed to originate in fish farms in the far east. In fact it makes me sad and embarrassed. To answer your question, yes, I would dislike the fish if it became clear, beyond reasonable doubt, that they are hybrid stock.

To be honest, despite initially refusing to believe they may be hybrids, I now lean increasingly towards that side. The female looks pure managuensis, but the male cannot be. Here is why:

My male "jag":

A male dovii:

Now I see exactly what flowerpower meant, and my apologies for my very OTT response to your suggestion that they are hybrids, something of which I am becoming increasingly convinced.

I posted this in your other thread...

This is a fish I raised from a jag spawn that seems to display horizontal lines of spots. He was 100% managuense. There is nothing in your pics that suggest anything but managuense.

I know jags. Green Terra knows jags. Those are jags.

You must be this tall to ride this roller coaster of a thread lol. Nice jags btw. Their geneology is not important. The fact that you stocked your tanks with a nice looking male and a nice looking female that you snagged with hook and line is awesome. The fact that you were able to catch jags in Singapore is not awesome.

I love that male and could care less if he has a smite of dovii in him.

Above all, they were caught by you, which is completely different, imho, than buying them at an lfs.

There has got to be a stronger connection...

Awesome male, let me tell you!

Miguel I agree with you100% on this. The fact that the OP cought these fish and the flawless condition says a lot. I would take pride in them, thay are great looking specemins and obvoiulsy well cared for.

Few people these days have the courtesy to reply like this. That's awesome of you HenCrenVie, you get respect points in my book.

I sold them today unfortunately. Making space for some F0 festae, a species I have never kept before and have always wanted, but couldn't get due to being in Singapore (cichlids are not popular here, and there is little demand for the less common species like festae). I thank everyone for your input and your patience with me in this thread, I shouldn't have reacted like I did when someone said he thought they were hybrids. At the end of it all I'm back to believing they were pure managuensis, but it doesn't matter anymore. I certainly would rather have a constantly fighting festae pair than the nicest jag pair.
