You Know what I was thinking? I love this site but I look at the posts and I see a lot of parrots. I wish people would talk about their personal experience keeping different cichlids Instead of just following people and repeating what someone else's experience or what they said. Thats how alot of miss information gets spread. sometimes I see the most retarded info being shared and I just have to shake my head and laugh but how bout the newbee keeping cichlids for the first time then I stop laughing.

Mayan? Not. Female? Probably. Male? Eh, perhaps.
Sell it to me and I'll discover her sex.:grinno:

Female imo the red under the chin and black dorsal blotch give it away also no white/blue spangling on the back half of the body

Males can get red on face and chin and they also can display dark dorsal but usually when brood protecting. There are also males with no spangling. But these are exceptions, not rules.

Anyone wanna take a stab at this one?

H'm...that's a tough one. How big is that fish? I see hints of spangling on the back half but the sort of black on the dorsal and full display of barring and lots of red makes me second guess myself. Awesome looking fish might have to wait til it gets bigger. It becomes very easy to tell the difference around 6+ inches. I would guess that you have a male

Some pics of mine and their sex. I vented mine

My 6.5" male

Also I might add that their colors can change very quickly most of the time my female is MUCH more red and her barring is jet black but the bars can fade with the blink of an eye

As I am new to keeping Festae's, I think they are all beautiful and can only hope that a few of mine will grow up and be close to the caliber of all of the ones shown.
