I nearly read every response into my surprise no one said what I was going to. As a long time keeper of both species the decision is simple for me. Whichever species is available to you at the time which one is a higher quality bloodline. And the attributes that might attract you could be different than what somebody else favors. For instance when I look for the Red terror to grow out and or breed the males must have a tall body and a green hue coupled with strong bars. Even if they had all of those traits I would reject it if it had a pointy mouth. Oftentimes you can determine the shape and finish of a fish from his parents what coloration and Spangles can vary. As far as the RTM goes some males seem to have bug eyes to me. My guess is from inbreeding Brothers to sisters over generations. But that's how they get some of those spectacular variations of color. A nice RTM has a hump on his head in my opinion and you don't see many of those. And both species of females can be wicked mean towards their mates so I like them smaller but obviously brilliant color, consistent markings and spread finish is important. I know this thread is extremely old but it's a beautiful topic and thought somebody may be interested in an opinion that has not yet been mentioned. My final two cents is with a big enough aquarium you could house both. Because the Red terror gets huge and aggressive whereas the RTM is much smaller but even more territorial in my opinion and is able to protect its cave relentlessly. And it will typically pick a territory the taller body fish physically cannot enter
