Males can get the black dorsal at times as seen above.....such as during breeding or while stressed.

It won't be solid and is only their barring continuing into the dorsal, unlike the females which have solid black across the dorsal.

The male shown in the Australian strain pics is not the norm and you can still see breaking in the black even though it is pretty solid.

well most of the time mine has a blue black dorsal but alot of blue spangels and is probobly stressed because my female parachromis losielli chases the festae when the festae gets close to her territory.

i dont know if you can say that for sure though because the pic VRWC posted of Nelson's male has a pretty solid bar in his fins (at least looks like solid bar to me), its pretty much if it has the bar without the spangling then its female, but with or without the bar if it has body spangles its a male

Thats because the male can get the black dorsal, just like the female, at different times, as balton stated.

There is no difference between these 2, as if you are to consider the males dorsal "broken" black, so is this females.
So is spangling a key to sexing festae? Aside from venting?
after about 4 inches or so, it can help you guesstimate with a little more certainty, but nothings ever 100% under about 5 inches or so.
