neither of those two characteristics are ways to tell the sex of festae...different locales & different strains of the species look completely different than one another and the heads are different looking. Look at the festae strain in Australia. It looks different than those currently being sold in the trade.

Color can differ according to stress level, tankmates, food, spawning or not, genetics & more. The male above is 4 inches and look at its color.
 
there usually pretty easy to sex. males have blue spangle and females usually loose theres but not always. females have a solid black dorsal fin while males black verticle lines protrude up into the dorsal giving it a black broken look. if you see a festae over 5 inches and not in breeding colors then there pretty easy to sex. those are the most simplest and basic way to sex them for new festae owners or potentiel festae buyers.
