Since your FH is a fader, you can have any color/set ups you'd like! Just pick the best set up that you like.

If you do go barebottom, make sure you have a good biological filtration or low bio-load since no gravel=less room for the BBs.

Wow that looks really nice and
clean...
I never thought id be a fan of the bare bottom..
but that actually looks good.. I guess the river rocks help some.
I mean they like to dig tho?
Uggh now i have more to decide
that although would be cheaper and easier.

I could always just keep his marble colection in there
for him to move around...?

hmmm thoughts..

my FH actually doesn't like digging at all, i guess it depends on each FH... but all the red devils/midas i've ever had, dig like madmen.

but w/ your FH being faded, you can do w/o the green gravel mixed in there, or go w/ a totally natural gravel, driftwood etc... but i like where you are headed.

After thinking about my response you're probably right.. Here's why..

I think the sand I was using was a light/small grain sand. It might be good to only use heavier grade sand. I think I was using 3m S grade and it was a very light sand. Might have been more of a grade problem then me saying all sand in general. Sorry about that.

same problem here, the local store was out of t grade! Regular sand does not go into my filters only 3m s-grade.

I have sand in my 55 but i have small sevs in there so its no biggie.
the "substrate" is meant to hold the bacteria.. so its kind of necessary to have something in there eh? So im saying wouldnt it be harder to keep your levels right etc etc?

good point^^ I never thought about that but I do run at least 1hob and 1sponge filter on all of my tanks and paramaters never change. Even on my barebottom tanks I don't notice anything.
