one of my firends does keep his on battery back ups so he will have some bio if/when power goes out..

That does seem like a good idea. I'll have to look around for inexpensive battery backups. Nothing fancy, just enough to keep it running until I get home from work/school.

lol. the fiberglass tanks won't fit into the room we had planned for them. i'm not crazy about the idea of having two blue (8x4x2.5) 523-gallon tanks in the middle of the living room, haha. i might could handle one.

we'll see what happens. matt might still convince me that we desperately need both of them and that living room furniture is terribly over-rated. lol.

Morning foot massages > sticks of wood glued/nailed together. That and, of course, RAYS!!! :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

Love you babe!

I used a 45 mil Firestone liner every time. It will end up leaking on you.

I used a Lifeguard FB600 as an addition to my large DIY wet/dry. It worked great. I loved the thing and never had any water quality problems. It is the best bio filter out there for the money.

My rays were very happy in that pond for years.

Wow, I've never heard of someone having a problem with a 45 liner before. It might be a good idea to double it up, then.

About the FBF, that's what I keep hearing. Miles keeps recommending them to us, and he's a pretty sharp guy when it comes to this stuff. I'll try them out when the get here.

why not get a bio-reactor?

i dont know why more people dont use them. plus a small one can handle pretty much any load u throw at them....

ever since i hooked mine up, my tank has been very stable with crystal clear water.

Never heard of those before. It is time for me to bed down (well past, actually...) so I'll just do a really quick search on it. Thanks!

So, it does with ceramic media what a FBF does with sand?

basically yes, but plastic media not ceramic...

Ok, good stuff. I wish I had a pair of tanks that were of equal size so that I could find the measurable differences between the two types of filtration (bioreactor and FBF).

I had a bit of trouble finding a commercial source of that type of bioreactor. I'm not looking into purchasing one just yet, but I did want to at least see what was out there.

Thanks for the info; I'm sure it will come in handy in the future, especially when we get around to making a real ray habitat. :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

I got the FBF's in today, and tried one of them.

I tried the FBF and it started fluidizing, but the level went too high so I had to shut it off. Every subsequent attempt at it has failed miserably. :(

It simply leaks a little bit of water through the "out" tube, but nothing is getting through the sand. I see that a little bit of sand (~3") is backed up into the small secondary chamber in the tower. Is this the problem? If so, how do I fix it?

I tried gently rocking it, as well as everything else I can think of (draining the water and trying again, etc). Any help would be greatly appreciated! I want to get it going so that it can cycle as I add rays, when the time comes.

The solution to this is rocking it back and forth, pretty much. (That and whacking it with a screwdriver .) :screwy::crazy: Thanks Neoprodigy, for the help.

The Fiberglass tanks are coming in soon; I'm thinking about buying a few hundred pounds of fine river gravel. Any thoughts?
