Filter for 55g

So I want to get a better filter for my 55 gallon tank and want to make it bare bottom. Would a fluval fx6 be to over kill? Would a set up with an airstone on the other side of the tank and filtration on the other make bare bottom work? Thanks in advance

no such thing as overkill with filters. put the intake as low as you can in one corner, add circulation type pump on the other end aimed across the bottom towards the intake.

I think that could be too much flow for some species.
