Filter for a 100Gal Turtle tank ?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had a lot of turtles. Few things...BARE bottom has been great for me...very easy to suck up poo IF it even stays. Also LOTS of mech filtration. They are messy eaters and poo big bombs (if its a bigger turtle) so I like to have good mech filtration as well as bio. a FX5 wouldnt be too much for a 100 gal if you ask me. The bigger it is the more if filters and doesnt clog and need cleaning every week. I use internial filters for baby turtles...once they get big the internials clog I find.

If it were me I would drill the bottom of the tank so you can have a set water level that you want in the tank. Bio in the wetdry and canister for mech filtration. The wetdry will also not allow the water to drop as it evaps. Since the tank wont be full it helps keep the glass nice and clean...not multi water lines down the front of the tank.

I have a ehiem 2215 on a 20gal tank with my 1yr old snapper that is about 4" in shell.

Theres a thread where you can get a fx5 for like 220 too....

Thanks for that little bit of info' NOLAGT , on Ebay i can get an Fx5 for about £140.00 Posted , so i might still think about getting another one for this tank that i will be using for the Turtle if you say it wouldnt be a waste of money ( like i do , sort of ?! ) So thats why i was thinking on getting a 305 or 405 . But i still will have a think on which one to get ( the 305 , 405 or the Fx5 ) .

IDK how much the 305 and 405 are...are they MUCh less than a fx5?" To me tho...turtles are messy...messy eater...big poop. So to me the bigger the filter the more time between cleanings unless the nitrates get high. I had a RES turtle in a tank 36x18x20tall and I had a duetto 100 internal filter. This was a temp tank untill I got a pond for the turtle. That internial filter would clog a few times a week...what a pain. The ehiem 2215 I have on the 20gal with the snapper has been doing good so far.

You could go with 2 smaller canister filters that you could alternate the cleanings on. It would keep your water clear and still be affordable. An internal sponge filter attached to a power head might help with the poo problem.

The 2 smaller ones would be a valid option too...you would also have redundancy...if one goes out you still got one running. Also you get 2 different points of intake rather than one...thats my reason for running 2 xp3's on my 240 with a wetdry.

One note...you will have to brake the water surface some way or you will get a hazy film on the top of the water. You can manipulate the canister return to do what you need. One idea if you have 2 canisters...one return in the water to circulate the poo into the filter and one going over a rock/wood setup or something like that giving you a waterfall effect. If you can take the noise (I like it) you get a nice look in the tank and that will brake the surface of the water.

Going with 2 filters sound a good idea , 1 at each end . :) Been looking on Ebay and the prices for a 405 is not much less than a Fx5 so i will prob's go with a Fx5 . Not sure yet .

I still dont know what type of Turtle it is ! He's ment to ringing tonight to give me a some info on him and double check i still want the Turtle .

Do diffrent Turtles need diffrent types of filters ( bigger , smaller ) ?

I mean with fish like Oscars and Common Pleco are know to big Poop Machines and need a bigger , stronger filter and some fish like Gourami or a Jack Dempsys , there are not as big and dont poo as much and are ok to have a smaller filters on there tanks ?!

The bigger the turtle, the bigger the poo, and alot more of it. Lol If you can afford the 2 Fx5's, then you will have more than enough filtration. I'd probably just opt for 2 smaller ones though.

I had thought that the one time i looked at a 405 I thought the price was the same as a fx5 or something. I would just do the fx5 if you get one....you could get 2 of those but I think one in enough. Can always add later too. Or make it a fish tank if you dont like the turtle lol.

I said ill give it a couple days and have a think about it and which one to get , he did say i could have all 3 if i want too but i'm not 100% sure if i could get all 2 and them all in together in my 4x2Foot tank .
