Filter problem help asap please!!!

Hey so im a little stressed out this morning and hope you guys think im making the right move...
So just before i decide to head out for work, i went downstairs to check on the fish, and all seems fine but one of my ray holding tanks looks cloudy...i turn on the lights and is was...did a water sample and everything is fine but my ammonia is at about 1.5 med. green color on api kit, and was fine yesterday-it appears that the 2 hob filters i have must have shut off and kicked back on not too long ago and theres a bunch of crap in the tank now...so i removed the ray and put it in a 55 gal bin where im slowly acclimating it to my larger holding tank (they are going into my pond which should be done next week)

do you guys think this was the smart move...
called my boss and told him id be late this morning-got "a flat"

Sounds like a good decision to me, with the ammonia level you could easily come home ot a dead ray if you left him in the old tank.
 
thanks for the reassurance! i even cut 2 small pieces of shrimp while she was in the bin, and she ate them aggressively! she looks like shes fine, very active and whatnot...keeping fingers crossed, and will let you guys know how she is tonight when i get home...going to move her in about 10 min

ok new question:
should i wait until the ammonia level in the bin is almost gone...because its still at around 1 right now...

can i safely move her into the new tank? or do i have to wait?
 
When you say "took some water from the bin to lessen Ammonia" I assume you topped up with fresh as if not you simply gave less water but with same concentration of ammonia.

I think HOB is too inadequate for Rays IMO. I think big externals, sumps or pond filters are the only way to go. I also think a fluidised bed is important to quickly react to ammonia spikes.

You also need to keep diluting any ammonia with good quality water changes to dilute the killer.
 
im doing a drip from the good tank into the bin...and taking some of the bin water out every half hr...to dilute the bins ammonia level...

and yes i agree, hobs suck, especially after today for me! the tank she is goind into has two canister filters and air pumps...
