Finally getting custom terrarium!! now what monitor/exotic reptile should I get.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No.

Ah, okay. Is there any other place that it might fit? It'd be preferable to have the width be 24", but if your friend who's building the cage thinks it'll be fine then go for it.

The worms and snails should be fine; I'm not sure on the locusts (or are you referring to grasshoppers). You might be able to find canned snails that are canned in water; those are pretty cheap from what I understand and are a good food source provided that the ackie will eat them (they don't always eat dead stuff).

what is signifigantly wrong with my givin diet?? What can i tune up?? minimum budget?

What kind of diet would be the cheapest for them but of course also acceptable?? i would prefer not to buy incests every week for the ackie. As for for the "locusts" i'm pretty sure they are grasshopper. They are green and brown in colour. as for the canned ones do you mean the ones for human consumption like escargot?? Don't they put other ingredients??

You're going to have to provide them with insects daily; there's no getting around that fact. The canned snails are fine provided that they are just canned snails and water with no additives; you can either buy the variety for human consumption or the specialty reptile ones.

It's way too high in fat and other things, and it's not going to be properly digested because ackies do not eat a large amount of animal protein in the wild. The diet that you listed would work for an adult of a larger monitor species that preys on mammals, but it will not work for a insectivore such as an ackie.

is a steady diet of earth worms ok with crickets and grasshoppers once or twice a month?? How often should I feed the meat and egg?? do U keep ackies??

whats the insect thats the easiest to breed and that LEGAL in canada??

I've heard that cricket are hard to breed since they are cannible and dubio roaches are illigal. Meal worms or something?? thats the minimum breeding inclosure?? abolutely the smallesy size. A bucket?? a 5 gal tank??

That's certainly better than a meat-based diet. Toss in some snails and/or superworms/mealworms a few times a week, and it should be fine; the eggs and meat should be fine every once in a while based on what I've read.

I myself do not keep ackies, but I have read a ton on them; I considered getting one a few years ago, but their need for tons of insects and rarity in my area caused me to reconsider.

Mealworms are pretty easy; here's a guide. Superworms are better, but they're tougher to breed; here's a guide.

Crickets are a pain as are many other feeders insects; butterworms can't breed outside of Chile because they're irradiated upon export.

I'm fairly sure earthworms are a nutritious food item, which is why it is primarily used as a staple in caudata feeding.

Wow super worms are hard to breed!! i think I could breed earthworms or mealworms. How do you breed earthworms?? can i feed earths to my ackie for 6 days and feed some else the last day?? sorry for being a pain in the butt.

You are limited to canadian nightcrawlers, crickets, horn, wax, butter, meal, micro, silk, and super worms up north.

I'd find a supplier then worry about breeding, or maybe just rely upon a supplier. If you can't afford the food it is best to reconsider your choice.

24 inches won't fit in the room in my basement. Doesn't the ackie have a flexible tail? I'm also going to but a large piece of wood for my ackie to rest to max out for more space. My biggest problem is the feeding. Do i actually have to shell out 300 bucks a year for a single lizard??? not to be cruel but is there an alternate diet other than crickets and meal worms? I'm pretty sure i'm not allowed to breed incect since reptiles keeping was almost out of the question. Can i feed an ackie with meat such as turky and pork and also pellets (if there is any?). I can feed the ackie crickets too but not as often as asked. Can i catch common grass hopper and locust and worm in my back yard to feed the ackie??

I suggest you reconsider until you can afford the animal, and provide better housing. Feeding wild prey is a no no.

It is a suggestion merely out of the reptiles best interest.
