Finally got Hoplarchus psittacus to spawn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been having the same issue Peter. Since I moved most of my fish out of the 220g my psittacus have spawned 3 times in the last 4 weeks. First 2 times they ate the eggs and the last time they protected until they hatched then the female started eating them. I was able to net out about 40 wigglers while she was feasting on them. Very frustrating:irked:. The forty I was able to steal are swimming and doing good. Give oyur psittacus some time, I think they will get it right soon. Mine are getting a little better every time.

How are the notatus fry? Mine had the second spawn today. There are a ton of eggs, look to well over 500. Hope yours are doing well.

Yeah it's frustrating...they laid tons of eggs and guarded for almost three days. I bet mine did the same thing - started eating the eggs when they hatched :(

Bob warned me too....will get the eggs out next time :irked:

Notatus fry are doing well....I think. Saw them a couple of weeks ago - lots of round little bellies. Almost time to move on to something else ;)

The best way that I found was to put them in with a undergravel filter plate and the wigglers would fall down under. Then they could gain a little strength and I could suck them out with a siphon.

Cool! I do have one around somewhere....I think.

So they have a history of doing this?

Congratulations! a very challenging species indeed.
Very nicely layed out tank.
Why is it more people have success with the Venezuelan variants from the Rio Orinoco vs. the Brazilian Rio Negro one's? I worked with both but never anything from the Brazilian one's.
