Finally got Hoplarchus psittacus to spawn

Very nicely layed out tank.
Why is it more people have success with the Venezuelan variants from the Rio Orinoco vs. the Brazilian Rio Negro one's? I worked with both but never anything from the Brazilian one's.

I think it is just a matter of water conditions. All of the Orinoco fish that I have keep seem me adaptable to harder water and higher PH. The rio negro fish seem to refush to breed with out the proper conditions. Mine are from a spawn from the pair that Peter has and they did not breed until I got my PH down to aroung 6.0 or just a touch below.

How are the Lamina doing? I believe it was you that bought some at the ACA convention. I bid on both groups but ended up being to cheap to buy either. Hope they breed for you, they were great looking specimans.

Im digging the tank setup, simply perfect. Id like to try a similar setup someday with hoplarchus, geophagus, and heros. Unfortunately, I dont have the space right now.

You are probably right JD. I have soft and acidic tap water. For whatever reason the pH dropped again recently - I think it's about pH5-5.5 now. It's below the lower limit of my test kit, so I'll have to borrow the pH meter from work to test it. The S. daemon pair are really liking it!

Freaking atlanta people with there soft water drive me crazy. If it stays are 5.5 I'm going to sell my house and move there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess the saltwater and african cichlid keepers don't care to much for it though. But who care about them. I want your freaking tap water conditions.

lol it usually hovers just under pH6. Was a PITA to raise it to pH8 when I kept CAs though, but I guess it's a lot easier to raise pH than to lower it

OUCH! Just read they ate them?thats a bummer.Ya sure they aren't in the gravel?or under decorations?I have had fry disappear for a few weeks and then all of a sudden show up.
