I know this is an old thread but I am new to the community and wanted to share my experience with my payara...I originally got 10 at about 5" for my 125g but after a few months one individual was outgrowing the others pretty quickly and the next thing I knew he started picking the others off. After about a year he had eaten everyone and tripled his size and is now about 15"+. He has eaten everything I've put in the tank including a giant sleeper goby that was almost as long and much wider, large tire track eel and a few others I was sure he would leave alone. He had that goby hanging out of his mouth for hours tryin to get it down and when I woke up there was no trace of it left. After reading through this site I'm now pretty sure what I have is an Armatus.

Best fish EVER~!

LUCKY!!! Especially if you paid the price of a scomb for it!

The red-tail in this thread came under my possession in February of this year. He got me hooked on the hydrolycus sp. and now Im a proud owner of an armatus my self. Unfortunately the two fought too much so I traded him for an 11.5" NTT.

ya I do feel lucky now that I know the difference...although in all actuality i bought 10 of them at $40 each and he ate all 9 of the others so I ended up with one fat armatus for $400...lol It sure was dope when I had a whole school of them though. I would totally pick up a couple more if i could find some as large as mine. Would need a bigger tank though...:)

what kind of setup do u have? and how big is he now?

Had him in a 125g with two canister filters and a couple jets in each corner. Just pulled him out tonight though cuz I'm in the process of redoing his tank.

very nice ;)

Bro, can you get any clearer pics of the tail and adipose fin? It might be a tat. If so, that's one of the largest tats around. A much rarer thing than a 15" armatus now-a-days.

I'm no expert here.......but I'm callin that a Tat.

Adipose is dark.

Fin under the adipose (cadual?) is too small. Lack of white.

Overall dark appearance.

Tail screams red with black edge....lack of white.

Arguements?

Agreed with KRS 110%, much rarer than a 15in Armatus.

3RD pic down you can see his tail in the reflection...has the black banding with white edging and "feather" which I believe tats do not have such a broad black banding rather a thin black edging...I say armatus, but would like to see the adipose fin better though as it is hard to tell due to the angle and lighting whether it is dark in reality or not.
