ok,i moved my 125 to its perm spot, doing south americans, sevs, firemouths maybee, dithers,i have an old 404 fluval that might still work, thinking of also adding a hang on back like the emp 400 with it,i have some black grav but i love the fish interaction and look of white sand, cant decide,i want it very plain and natural looking, lfs said they can do a sump for under 300 bucks,...............im on a budget, should i try the 404 and hang on back,,,,,,,,or 2 hang on backs,,,,,,,,,,,,,or any other ideas for under or around 200 bucks,if i use the 404 with hang on back what should i put in it,some say they would take out the sponges and fill it with bio balls or chemipure.please give suggestions,i need to get the ball rollin. :) :nilly: :chillpill: sorry just gettin excited.

come on anyone, you can move this to set up and filt forum if yuod like,im not sure how.

I say screw the HOB and buy a Eheim classic 2217 with you 404. That would be great filtration and would hold so much more nitrafying bacteria. Even though the Bio wheels mix air in I still say you will always get more BIO through a canister. Oh and got any pics of the tank.

IF you go the emperor 400 route, i suggest that A. you look on amazon.com - usually have several of them for under $50 and B. ask the vendors before buying to make sure you get an older model (blue box with african cichlids on it) instead of a newer model (blue/silver box with discus). the older model has viewing windows so you can see the bio-wheels, and flow control so you can turn it down during feeding.

Use the 404 and a emporer 400 with supercartrages. Canisters don't even come close to thier bio capacity even when filled with nothing but creamic rings or scrubbies. Add on a pair of hydro 5's and your ready for anything at a bargan price.

I just noticed the previous post... The adjustable B model of both the 400 and 280 was replaced because of flow and impeller problems. I have...and use both kinds but I would MUCH rather have one of the more reliable and much simpler non-B models....The Emporers started out WITHOUT this feature and it was added for a short time before bieng dropped.

Hydro 5's are sponge filters, they're like $11.

Eheim 2217's are like $110 from drsfostersmith.com but like $250 in a LFS. I forgot about the supercartridges for the Emp 400s. They may have more biological capacity than a canister filled with ceramic cylinders but that can't be proved enitrely just yet. We would have to do testing and totals of surface area. I mean biomax has 100 square feet of surface area per cyclinder and in a 2217 you have about 20 bags of AC110 biomax. Each bag having about 50 cylinders you end up with grand total of 100,000 sq. ft of surface area. Now you tell me does a canister have more bio capacity or does a Emp 400 i say the 2217.

how bout the 2217 and a emp 400,kind of woried about the 404,about 5 years old and had some chettering before where the impeller woud stop and go.your info has been greatly apr,:clap
