Finished the 3d background!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
looks really nice but i would be concerned that the crevices could cause a problem with particles getting stuck or that cleaning between the rocks might be difficult but i guess it depends how deep the mortar / silicone is thats holding it in place.

it does look really nice though :-)

Thanks guys,
It is about 2" from peak of the rocks to the inside. Some are 4".

I cut a 8ftx4ftx1" down into strips (2" and 4" pieces) Home depot graciously cut it at the store for me so i knew it was nice and straight. From there, my wife and I cut the pieces down to fit and to look like rocks. That took a few Saturdays to get done.

I never thought about the cracks being an issue. I have this running plumbed into a 375 gallon so I will have roughly 850 gallons. So hopefully there is enough volume to counter any issues of any junk getting stuck in the cracks.

I plan on putting white sand down as well. Still trying to decide on the kind. I may try some bead blast sand. Otherwise I was looking at caribesea torpedo beach. I wanted the white tile down as it always bugged me when my rays would move the sand and I would see the dirty plexi underneith. This way when they move the sand around I still see white.

Very creative and different, personally I would ditch the plastic plants.....each to their own though.
I like it very much!
Good luck with your rays when you get them.

I can't even tell that was foam! I was thinking how heavy that background was because I thought it was all real rock! You’re going to have to answer a few questions about that background :)
1) Did you individually coat each foam block with cement then install the foam blocks to the back of the tank?
2) How did you glue the foam to the tank? Was that area not covered with cement then just silicone to the tank walls?
3) Did you have to tip the tank on its back to get everything glues and sealed?
4) I will have more questions depending on these answers :)

More pictures! This background is awesome!

Oh sounds awesome! Pool filter sand, blasting sand, and play sand are all great cheap options. But blasting sand may be a little sharp on the Rays so unless your mixing it I would stay away from it. Works great for tanks without fish that spend a lot of time on the bottom though.
