Finished the 3d background!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
looks really nice but i would be concerned that the crevices could cause a problem with particles getting stuck or that cleaning between the rocks might be difficult but i guess it depends how deep the mortar / silicone is thats holding it in place.

it does look really nice though :-)

I think if any food gets stuck in the crevices the rays would be able to blow it right out. If he aims a power head occasionally at the wall it should eliminate built up detritus.

That styrofoam is going to be buoyant. How did you adhere it to the back wall?

I can't even tell that was foam! I was thinking how heavy that background was because I thought it was all real rock! You’re going to have to answer a few questions about that background :)
1) Did you individually coat each foam block with cement then install the foam blocks to the back of the tank?
2) How did you glue the foam to the tank? Was that area not covered with cement then just silicone to the tank walls?
3) Did you have to tip the tank on its back to get everything glues and sealed?
4) I will have more questions depending on these answers :)

More pictures! This background is awesome!

1. The majority of the rocks are siliconed to a flat piece of 1/2" foam. These ones we had all lined up and siliconed without the concrete on them. We then made sure it fit in the tank and then cemented the whole "piece" There are 4 different "pieces" that are in the tank 2 back pieces and 2 side pieces. The rocks overlapped the edges of the pieces in on direction so that they fit together like a puzzle when inserted into the tank. Otherwise they would not fit through the opening. We did 2 base layers this way to ensure all foam was covered. We painted them with the flat piece of foam down on the ground to make sure when the cement ran it would run into the cracks. The 1st coat was very runny and the second coat was thick. After each piece had the 2 coats on there we inserted them into the tank and siliconed the flat piece to the back of the tank to make sure it would not lift as Energy stated they are boyent. We then did a final coat of cement/ colored cement to fill any cracks/divits we created due to having a tighter fit in the tank after we added the cement. Once dry we sealed it with aqua mix mortor sealer. We put it in a spray bottle and just sprayed the entire thing.

2. The majority was siliconed to the back piece and then siliconed to the tank. A few pieces on the sides needed to be individualy cemented and siliconed to the tank itself otherwise you would see the 1/2" flat piece on the sides when looking at it from the front.

3. Everything was done outside the tank except for the last coat and sealer.

We then siliconed the plants in the gaps to make it look like they were growing out of the rocks.

Lmk if you have any other questions

Any pics of the cementing process?

That looks super nice and looks like a whole lot of work! I hope it is something you keep in there forever as it would suck to have that much work in something to only pull it later (:

Yea me too,
Cost wise it was looking around $130 the most expensive stuff was the sealer.

very well done. looks as good if not better than something you might have bought.

i was thinking about the crevices and if you did happen to have a problem you could allways point a hose at the background during a water change to dislodge any potential problems.
looks great and im looking forward to seeing the rays in there.

well done !
