I am wanting to get a fire eel to go into my 125, but I am finding mixed information about them.. Is a 125 big enough for a adult fire eel? (I am getting a baby one..) Could I put other fish in with him? What kinds would he be ok with? Should I get two? I only want one but have heard they do best in pairs, and also heard they will not tolerate another fire eel in the same tank.. I am wanting a few medium sized peaceful fish to go with him.. (My aquarium is currently setup but empty..)

A 125g will not house an adult Fire Eel. Check out a Peacock Eel or Zig Zag Eel, both would work out well in a 125g for life.

interested to hear the answers. I have heard that they can and that they can't, so let us see what the great fish gods respond. I was thinking about one in my 125 with some discus and angels, but....

What size tank would you recommend for one? I will be getting a larger tank in a few years and if I can't get one now I would like to get one then.. Also what can they be housed with? Should I get two or will they fight?

Check this out here

Actually should read the entire thread as the OP talks about the growth rate of his Fire Eel.

But anyways, he is saying at least a 240g, I have heard of others who can get by with a 180g.

Basically they can get HUGE and require large tanks. If you're going to stick with the 125 for a year or longer then I'd suggest looking into a different eel.

I have a 150g and gave away my Fire Eel once it reached about a foot and a half in length to a guy (member of my local fish club) that had a nice 400g tank.

Anyways - I have a 150g which is the same footprint of the 125 just taller, and I wanted to get an eel I could house for life in my tank. I ended up picking up a Zig Zag Eel and I have been very pleased with him/her. Gets along just fine with my loaches even though they crawl all over him/her and my ZZ is always out and about in the evening cruising the tank. Fun eel to have and I'm glad I picked up another eel as I missed not having one.

I don't know, I'm not really a fan of their pattern... Or the peacock really... I am wanting to train one to hand feed, will a ZZ do that?

I don't see why not, my ZZ is still rather new in the tank, ate for the first time last night. Hoping to have him trained in hand feeding here shortly.
