Fired Up About Fire Eels!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IMO experience raiseing both-Is that the Fire tend to grow a bit faster overall----I did have better luck when they were younger getting the tire to grow faster---But that only lasted until they got to around the 12 to 14 inch mark-Then the fire just kinda took over from there......
Also at the time though-I wasn't really trying to compare growth rates either.....

I have read a few reports that they have been spawned in aquariums...how common is this?

I have a 300gal fish tank that I am ultimately wanting to put them into. I was hoping for a group of at least four to six of the adult fire eels. Will the larger groups plus the large tanks size help spread out the aggression?

It should i'm not sure if any body has tried a large group like that would be cool to hand feed 6 giant fire eels

For growth they seem to grow about the same speed fires grow a little faster once they get over they 14''-16'' mark my tire track eel is about 10''-11'' and hasn't seemed to grow at all in the 3 months i've had him fun fish though

Both eels should eat shrimps at around 12'' tire tracks should take small fish at around 12'' and fires around 14''-16'' usually some take small fish when young like when there 6'' they just seem to wait when in captivity in the wild they usually eat small snails, worms and insect larva when young then they move on to crustations and small fish

Was actually just talking about that with me pops today. . .;). A pond is definately something that will be doable. Only problem I see is how to keep them IN the pond?

You don't think a 6' x 3' x 2' footprint would be large enough? :D My 300gal is 8' x 2' x 30" I believe. :) I want a group of these guys in a display tank if possible. Aggression should be more spread out the more I have right? More hiding places as well. If need be I'll make a custom tank or something. :)

I now have a project, and am aiming towards a goal. Gives me something to work towards! :)

Yea I'm looking for a fire eel as well. I had one a long time ago but it died within a week, no clue as to why. It was awesome though.. hand fed it after only 3 days.. I miss that guy and really want another.

What did you do to get it to hand feed? I am really looking forward to this! Do you just hold frozen blood worms in your fingers? COOL!!

Has anyone every gotten nailed by their eel?

Mine ate frozen krill, I'm allergic to bloodworms so I couldn't feed it those.

And yes, it bit me several times.. it would actually bite me more then the food, but thats fine.. it startled me at first but got to the point where I knew it was coming lol.
