Public service doesn't mean to serve everyone... Next time, try to call LAPD to report a crime happens in your area, see if they show up ;)
You speaking about jurisiction? Unless I'm mistaken, this resident was well within the fire department's so-called jurisidiction, so the argument is null.

Read again.. Fulton is the next county... Thus, fee was required, since that area doesn't have its own FD

So I'm curious, does anybody know how this works in other areas where you live outside of the county? Surely there has be to other similar scenarious for those who live out in the middle of nowhere. Do they pay fees also, or are they automatically covered by the local FD?

I've never lived out in the hills so I don't know :)

Your property tax is the "fee" for your local PD, FD, etc... When you buy a brand new home in a developing area, they add some fee for building school, and other "public" service :D If you live in the middle of no where, you're the "King of the Hill!" :D

^^HAHA that is absolutely absurd. You do know that they charge you for an ambulance ride after you have arrived at the hospital and have received treatment. If you're child calls 911 because you have just had a heart attack, are they going to tell them they're not coming because mommy or daddy hasn't been giving their annual donation to the local fire department? NO, they are going to show up and provide their services first and ask money questions later
no its not absurd.

There are stuff where u pa yin advanced to services. If you have oil heat, do you not have to pay them in advanced before you get the heat? For your food, do you not pay them in advanced before you get your grocerys?

there has to be other areas like this but i dont know.

What i do know is most volly places will run a carnival or chicken roast or something similar to earn money to run thier station. This area just choose a yearly fee. Same thing just a different way of collection

True, this can't be the only place where they have this system. It must be a rarity, or else people wouldn't be so surprised and outraged. I live in a rural area and our fire protection is paid for by property taxes, as it is in most of the "civilized" world.

As to your second point, this is kind of silly - It is not at all the same thing, in that they don't stand by and watch your house burn if you don't spend money at the carnival or don't buy any chicken.

I didn't read the whole thread, but here is my opinion on the story. Bills get lost, shuffled under other papers, forgotten, etc. In his area, I'm sure you aren't paying your fire tax online... It could have been an honest mistake, forgotten bill, and they did nothing (not the case here, as the owner admitted, but I'm sure they didn't find that out until he was interviewed after the fact, anyway). To not put out the fire is asinine. All I can say is if I was standing in my yard, watching my house burn, while there was a line of fire trucks in my driveway with firefighters leaning on them, I would be purchasing a first class ticket to the pokey via a shovel from my shed.

To those comparing this story to insurance, you are way off base. Insurance is a private company you pay to protect you financially (basically legalized extortion). If you don't pay them, they don't have to protect you. They aren't run by the government. Firefighters, however, are. Just like ambulances (most), cops, etc. If I crash my motorcycle, I don't want to worry about being behind on my cop privilege fees. Throw my azz in the meat wagon and get me to the hospital. Public servants aren't an insurance plan.

Another thing to point out is this rural town didn't buy fire trucks by collecting $75 from it's few thousand citizens. The $75 is just for truck maintenance, electricity at the fire house, etc. The trucks were bought through taxes and federal funding. If he was a homeowner, he was more than likely a contributing member of society, therefor he did his part in purchasing the fire equipment. They could have fined him afterward for not paying the fee on time (which he probably wouldn't have payed anyway, but that is irrelevant here). This story is just another embarrassment to the country being viewed by the rest of the world. Everyone defending these pos's is just further embarrassment.

I used to live in a town that had a separate fire tax. They made sure that everyone kept current on this tax by not letting you reregister your vehicle until you paid the tax. However, if you had a fire between the due date of the tax and the expiration of your vehicle's registration, they would most certainly be putting the fire out. None of this "well, you are a little late on your fees"...:screwy:

I think it's ashame! Suposed to be a free country where all are treated equal
but I guess thats too much to ask for sometimes. I sure hope he has relatives to help him or he will be homeless over a measely 75 bucks. I personally would like to go take a dump on the firestation's front yard & tell em they need to pay me 75 to clean it up!
