they will always be together, probably breed before you have a chance to remove the others.

Alright, Now one of my LFS has a group of Firemouths between idk 3-4 inches or so. Would I maybe get lucky and be able to tell a pair in the tank and just buy the two or should I still buy a bunch of them to be safe. and what is their growth rate like?

an oscar can live a long happy life in a 55. go on any fourm oscars only reach like 12" max in the aquaria except you could only have the one fish in there being that he is almost full grown.

One why would you put a 12" fish in a 12" tank? Two your info is wrong oscars max at 12-14".

buy 4 to be safe, and when a pair forms, take the rest back. a pair will defend one area of the tank away from the others... so you will know when a pair forms.

If you're just keeping one tank and want to keep firemouths and breed them, I would get some high quality stock. The majority of firemouths I see really aren't the best quality. I would get some of the F1's Rapps is selling, that's just me. You might be able to find something nice locally, I never can.
