First catfish suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not sure what type of catfish I'd like to have ultimately. If I start off with 1 or a few cats for my 75 before I decide I want to upgrade what would be recommended? I really like sun cats but I see that they can grow in excess of 18". LFS also told me they like to be in groups so I don't know what would be reasonable. I'm interested in doing a community type tank so any info would be appreciated.

In that case - stick with sun cats, bullheads, Synodontis, Pictus types, none of the giants.
If you are going to start out with a 75, you should not even bother since you will need a massive upgrade in a few months, with any of the "giants."

I am interested in testing the waters with something that will comfortably stay in my 75 for life. I liked the spotted bullheads but couldn't find a source for them, I really like the sun cats but wasn't sure of there max size so am a bit unsure of them. I was thinking of getting a few of them and ordering up a 125 wide 72 x 24 x 17 but wasn't sure if the height of that tank was to small. I would get 6 if that's the case but I'd order the tank first.

Sun cats are gorgeous, and grow super slowly - and it is very rare to see a big one - a school of those would be awesome for a long time in that 75. I love spotted bullheads, and have had them - they are not easy to find - if you find any, let me know! BUT, you will need a bigger tank for those. One of mine hit 13 inches and had to be the only fish in the tank, since he took up so much space - he was always on the move.

Thank you for your advice I am considering a shoal of 6 with plans to upgrade when I move. I will be acquiring them at around 2 inches. What about decorations, plants and tank mates? I have a decent selection of cichlids in my breeding set ups to choose from. If not singles or groups of other community'esque fish would be appreciated.

Be as creative as you want with decorations and plants - tankmates for sun cats are pretty much anything that isn't neon size.

If you want to start with the easy catfish, go for Corydoras, if you want the big ones, go for the Emerald Corydora. If you keep them well, in a few years they can get to 5 inches, and some people have reported 7 inches.

I just recently acquired a 6ft 125 going to go with 6 Sun cats and not sure what else yet. Have lots of driftwood and may plant the tank with my extras.
