First catfish suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a very cool APurensis. These stay around 16" and have the appetite of a red tail. I would not go below a 180 with these cats.

I'll look into the suggestions. I have a line on a 200g tank from someone my old lady works with.

As much as I have dreamed of owning an RTC it is not in my future any time soon. So I am interested in something that can live it's life in either a 125 or 180 tank. I know nothing of catfish and am really unfamiliar with species. I've seen LNS's but I'm not sure if they tickle my fancy enough. Any advice is appreciated.

Brown Bullheads for a 120g ( you can get them in a spotted or splotched pattern).

I just picked up a very juvenile brown bull head I will post pics tomorrow for positive ID.

I love'em, post pics please, theyre little monsters in their own right theyre tough enough to hold theyre own with Green sunfish and Pumpkinseeds but not mean enough to kill everything in your tank.

Don't they get like 18 inches? The tank would require 2 foot depth correct? What about length of the tank and recommended tank mates?

Approximately 48*24*24 is a 120g tank which is the perfect size for these predators (I would say a 75g is the minimum), I am not sure how aggressive you want your tankmates to be or what kind of fish you want in the tank; but here are some choices, Medium to Large Lepomis Sunfish (Redbreast, Bluegill, Green, Spotted, central Longear, Pumpkinseed, Redear, Warmouth), Rockbass Ambloplites type, Chain Pickeral, Small Bass (like the Suwannee, Guadalupe, Spotted if the Bullhead is a little bigger than it, Redeye), Golden Shiners, Large Shad, Fallfish etc.

Is four foot length an appropriate distance or is it not super active. I would do sunfish with it I believe just have to pick the species. What about temperature? Is driftwood ok what about caves and plants. Thanks for all your help so far I'm so excited.

IF you are indeed ok with a species tank, I'm going to have to cast my vote for electric catfish! They grow quickly when they're young, but they slow down. My guy has been in a 40br for a while. Not saying it's ideal, but given his level of activity, it's fine for now (he will be moving to a 75-90 gallon in a month or so).

They are hilarious to watch, and pretty unique for a catfish. Mine eats out of my hand every night too! I've started keeping schools of small tropical fish in his tank to see how he handles company. Right now he has a school of neons in there with him, and I've only lost 2 in the past 10 days (8 left).
