the ruger 10/22 looks like the kind of gun im thinking about..

how's the price...

10/22"s are great guns, and fairly cheap too.. You can get a nice stainless one with a nice stock for under $300. Not sure what your budget is though.. You can always score ones cheaper than that too and just do all the upgrades yourself. You also don't have to go stainless, just go with the normal Blued finish.

Certainly can't go wrong with a 10/22 they're pretty much the cream of the crop from what I've heard/read. I'm not sure if they have guns shows up in IL but they're great for picking up deals. I also have two local gun shops and one of them sells/buys a LOT of used guns.

Why 30-30?

Most 30-30's are in a lever action rifle.

A 30-30 is a deer gun period, ammo WAY too expensive to shoot recreationally and horribly innacurate.

First of all, move out of IL and into a state where youre freedoms are still given to you and you wont have to deal with that FOID bull shnit!

Agree. My first deer rifle was a winchester 94, 30/30. my first hunt at about 75-100 yards broadside shot, aimed at top of shoulder hit way under the entire deer, kicked up a bunch of dirt which did hit the deer, needless to say that was my last shot, and my last hunt with a 30/30. Immediately traded for a 743BDL in 243 with a 3x9 bushnell scope. Problem solved, meat in the freezer. :nilly:

a great plinking mid range caliber is a .223 or a .270

.22 is like a air rifle My ass....

.22's and .17's are the greatest plinking weapons EVER

and a .30-30 is pretty over kill for a pigeon. if you want to kill pigeons (or any bird for that matter) get a .17 HMR. The bullet comes out like 1000 times faster (exaggeration) then the .22. .17 HMR is great for foxes, dogs, small mammals like cats (don't know about US hunting...) and if you don't want a .22 because it's not a centrefire, I advise a .22 Hornet - expensive on the ammo but sooo fun to shoot. :)

.223 is awesome to shoot aswell. I also Had lots of fun shooting a .22-250, they have the perfect amount of kick that makes you want to shoot them over and over and over again. might I add great sound aswell.

.270 is great to shoot aswell, unfortunately mine is a light weapon, with a thin barrel, short stock so when ever I shoot it the scope hits me in the head when I'm not thinking about holding it properly. and the thin barrel means it over heats quickly, so after three bullets I've gotta let it cool for 5 mins, lol.

hehe and with the ballistic round there is no more rabbit :D

perhaps a ruger mini-14(now the ranch rifle). its a .223 and a blast to shoot, and a .223 is MUCH more powerfull than a .22

this is my mini-14 180 series, not shure if a semi-auto is legal where you are.

Go to a gun shop. Do not repeat anything said in this thread and ask for advice. Also, a lot of indoor gun ranges will rent guns but they're usually hand guns. You might want to check in with ar15.com or some of the other gun forums. This is not the place to receive information about guns.
