First Gun **Gun People**

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i though 30.06 were concidered high powered.. and illegal?

is that not what the M1 Garand is? from my understanding you need a special permit for that gun

that's also what kennedy was shot with wasn't it?

i don't know il law but no, 30-06 shouldn't be illegal. move to texas, it's great here :D

a FOID doubles as a state ID...
so if i ever get (and suequently forget) a ticket..

or need to scare the crap out of a bartender, lol

i'm a total noob to guns.. i just picked a 30-30 cause it's a round im somewhat familiar with

we (my dad) has a few guns and just picked up a 30-30 winchester (john wayne's gun) he has a .22 (too weak, but fun) and an AR 15 (fine but a little too much for using on schnitz and giggles)

this is mostly a range gun, but i may go out hunting/pigeon shooting or something the more and more familar i get with the world of guns

in time i suppose it'll double as home security, but i'll prolly get a hand gun when that time comes around

honestly any advise towards a mid caliber bolt action rifle would well appreciate, jcardona i really want to thank you again...

If you're just gonna use this gun as just a plinking gun maybe a .17 or .204 would work(they are a blast to shoot), but when you start talking about shooting pigeons and home security that's a whole nuther ball of wax.. then you need a shotgun not a high powered rifle..

.202 is a fun gun?
isn't that smaller than a .22? which i've fired and it's basically a pellet gun

wouldn't the grain size need to be like 170?

30-06 illegal? haha!

But yes I would consider 30-06 "high powered" Heck even a 30-30 is very powerful, a shot from one and chances are you aint going to make it.

I blew a deer's leg clean off at the shoulder with a 30-30. The deer was at a angle towards me and the bullet entered his chest and then struck him in the shoulder right where it connects to the body, it was the most devastating bullet wound I have ever seen.

And, again, move to a free state if 30-06 is illegal!

For your first gun I suggest a .22 in a semi auto like a Ruger 10/22. They are cheap and fun to shoot plus there is a HUGE after market out there for them so you can hop them up a bit if you choose. Another neat .22 alternative is the GSG-5, a MP-5 clone but in .22LR, its very cool!

If you must go center fire and you want it for a range gun DO NOT GET a 30-30. WAY too expensive to shoot.

If you are wanting to just blast away at targest I suggest a semi-auto like an SKS. For a bolt action you cant go wrong with some of the surplus rifles out there right now such as the Mosin Nagant 91/30s, the M44s, K98s, etc. All shoot a commonly available and cheap surplus round (8mm or 7.62x54) and they all can be pretty accurate.

If you want a new bolt action I say go with savage and in .308. You can eventually turn that savage into a gun that is on par with a set up that costs $5,000 or more as they too have a large after market. I would choose .308 because its still a commonly used military round and surplus can be had from time to time plus you can get all kinds of different loads in .308 for different applications.

Like said before, for HD and clays you need a shotgun.

K98? as in this guy?

as in a WII gun.. it was cool if i had the money to start a collection, but for now unless they make new ones i think i'll pass... i have however used this gun in the call of duty games.. game physics aside i think it would be a great gun

i've heard a bit about .308's, which must mean theyare common, lol, so i think i;ll look into them..

it's definately going to be bolt action, i don't know they seem like the ferraris of the rilfe world to me (not fast perfay, just luxurious and prestigous)

the ruger 10/22 looks like the kind of gun im thinking about..

how's the price...

im going to look up (alot) about how to maintain a gun.. but in case it's vague, any tips?

a 30-30 is a lever action not bolt action

you mean a 30 caliber? you sound like you definitley need to do some research

Wrong. Simply wrong. Savage 340 comes in a .30-30 and so does a Remington 788 just to name 2.

Military surplus are cool cuz they're cheap to buy and cheap to target shoot, but the ammo gets more expensive to buy a legal hunting round. That is, one that does not have a full metal jacket. (You need a bullet with lead tip or hollow point to hunt with). If you want to find a cheap hunting rifle that is accurate I would look into the Remington Model 770, it is available in a wide variety of calibers and you can buy the gun brand new for a lot less than other makes. They even sell them in Walmart's up here.

If you're a one gun type of guy, look into the .270 winchester caliber. That is a very versatile round that can be used for everything from whitetail and mule deer to long shots like pronghorn and mountain goat.

Remington model 700. There are gobs of calibers but if I were getting one today I'd go with .308 but I guess it depends what you plan on doing with it.

Edit: Ohhh...first gun? I'd still stick with a 700 but in a smaller caliber that is cheaper or maybe even pick up a .22 they can be fun to plink around with. I have a Remington Viper which is certainly the definition of a beginners gun [after you've taken safety courses and use sound judgment when shooting]. Its cheap as hell to shoot and to be honest one of my more favorite guns to take out to the farm and BS around with.

Not mine, but a member's 700 on another forum that I frequent.

10/22"s are great guns, and fairly cheap too.. You can get a nice stainless one with a nice stock for under $300. Not sure what your budget is though.. You can always score ones cheaper than that too and just do all the upgrades yourself. You also don't have to go stainless, just go with the normal Blued finish.
