First Tank EVER

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can also consider getting a puffer, they are "special". Their eyes and the way they swim always cracks me up  They are very sensitive, so you'll need a fully cycled tank and stable parameters.

+1 great suggestion!
You will need to properly cycle first tho
You could cycle with some small pretty fish you like as some puffers might not eat them
With puffers everyone is individual they are a brilliant fish

Welcome to MFK! Just quickly, I wanted to say that everyone here knows their stuff - they all helped me out a lot when I first started too and every word they say is the complete truth. :)

Oscars are really fun to feed? Gosh, i'd be scared to put my hand in the fish tank if I had an oscar. LOL. They are nice but. :)

I'm calling bs on the truth part lol. Many have good intentions but no one knows everything....except maybe oddball.

Congrats on the new tank...patience is vital when starting a new tank...I say get the mollies you want n keep them in there as long as you can before adding other fish...good luck n enjoy

IME Oscars are great solo in 55s. Green terrors usually make cool solo cichlids. Everything that has been said about cycling is accurate and can I suggest the seachem water treatment products for starting and cycling you're tank. Seachem Prime ans Stability are great and I use them. The prime takes out chlorine and ammonia etch while stability gives beneficial bacteria supplements while the tank cycles just follow the directions on the bottle and don't add the big fish until the tank is 100% cycled.

Ok water has been in the tank for 12 hours now with nothing in there, going to the fish store (Nature Aquarium in Santa Monica) tonight to get some plants, chemicals, and substrate (friend ended up throwing his out). After that I'm going to wait a another 2 days before getting any fish. Any suggestions for basic chemicals?
