First Tank EVER

Ok if i were u i wouldnt wait to get fish in there.... Just turn your heater off and get like 2 goldfish... Leave them in there for like 3 days... GEAT A WATER TEST KIT lol. Api master freshwater is the best imo... Test your water after the 3 days if u have no amonia and nitrites but you have like 20 or 40 ppm nitrates... The tank is cycled do a water change and get the fiah you want... But get them slowly... Like 5 fish max at the same time... If your water doesnt have those numbers do a wc and wait another 3 days... Idk what all these ppl are sayinh... Dont get an oscar... Unless u plan on getting rid of it before its full grown... A 55 isnt wide enough to house a oscar for life... A green terror would work or like 4 fire mouths... A black ggost knife gets too big... You say you like the oddballs luke eels. Most eels get too big accept for peacock eel... You could get like 3 of those and have some mid level swimming fish. Or you could do like i have i have about 15 khuli loaches... They look like eels but dont get very big at all and dont have a big bio load.... If you have any questions about anything you can pm me im on here all the time

Bad picture but here's the setup of the tank so far. Going to get another piece of rock to set in that big open area. So much for my $300 budget; I ended up spending $450 at the store (I have a feeling that happens a lot) haha
So I'm feeling that the general consensus is that I should get a few small hardy fish to start with; amirite?

Hahaha now you've blown your budget and you still want more stuff you are officially one of us! I do that every time I re stock or start a new tank
Yeh I would start with something hardy and cheep until you are confident you know what your doing and the tank is stable
Mollies, tetras, danios, guppys etc are what I've used before

welcome to fish keeping it wont be long until you one day say that the 55 is to small and want to upgrade. i went from a 29 gallon to a 125 and now i have 4 tanks running. there is no such thing as a budget when it come to this hobby. just enjoy it and it will be worth every penny. IMO i love big fish but im my 55 gallon community i have a severum, blood parrot, bushynose and orange seam pleco, 2 german rams, 1 angel, 3 yoyo loaches and 1 black ghost. Most wosuld say that is way to many fish but i have a huge filtration system to handle the bio load. Thats the other key topic i think is a must to know.. Filtration....go over board there is no such thing as too much. i believe general rule is u want to push 8 times the water per hour so in a 55 gallon you want a filter system that that will do 440 gallons per hour at least in my 55 im running just over 600 gallon per hour for filtration. Some good filter for hang on tank are aquaclear 110 or marineland emperor 400. have fun and im sure everyting will work out!!!

+1, just get good filtration and change its water a lot beacause they are big messy fish...
