well i have 75 gallon tank that has been running for several months now and seems to be totally cycled. i have always wanted a pet largemouth bass, so i went down to the lake today and caught one ( about 7 inches long). i brought it back to my house in a large bucket, which i periodically added water from the fish tank to get it acclimated - however, upon adding the bass to the tank it died within like 20 minutes, i couldnt believe it. all the levels in the tank ( ammo, trite, trate ) are at safe levels and i have no idea why this fish died? any advice/help would be great, thanks in advance.

no the bucket was not airated, but i was adding fresh oxygenated water from the tank every several minutes - so i dont think it was lack of O2 as he seemed normal for the first few minutes he was in the tank. then things went downhill....

I was thinking lack of O2 as well.

How long was it in the bucket? Big fish use up oxygen fairly quickly. I once transferred a 8-10" perch in a cooler with about 5 gallons of water. The trip back to my house took a little over an hour. By the time I opened the cooler the damage was already done, I couldn't revive him. :irked:

EDIT: it could also be from the stress of being hooked, caught, and transferred? Speaking of stress... I once had a 90g tank with about 20 wild caught minnows. I had to move them to another tank the one day and hours after the move all but 2 died. I figure it was from the stress of being chased around with the net. The water they were transferred to was from the original tank and was the same temperature.

he was totally fine in the bucket, breathing, responsive, etc. he was only in the bucket about 10 minutes before i started adding oxygentaed water from the tank. its when i put him in the tank he started doing poorly. i cant, for thelife of me, figure out what the hell is going on....

Too much stress for it maybe...between the catch and the transfer. Perhaps he swallowed the hook and something was damaged when you pulled it out?

no, there was virtually no damage from the hook. i dont think it was directly related to stress as its health almost immediately declined as it was put in the tank. the other fish in the tank were breathing fine, and have been breathing fine, is there anyway that the bass just wasnt getting enough o2 ??? i have a one inch airstone and a HOB filter that oxygenate the water.

fwiw, the fish began going directly vertical underwater - then it seemed to totally lose control of its body as it began floating around in strange positions ( upside down, sideways, etc) while occassionally making an attempt to correct itself.

being barely hooked doesnt mean there was hardly any damage, just the stress from the fight takes a major toll on the fish and if you combine that being in a bucket then dumped into a new tank probably stressed it out to badly. It might have been already dying in the bucket it was just harder to see

granted im no scientist - but, as i said before, the fish was ok in the bucket and tank at first and THEN began acting all weird, leading me to believe that some aspect of the water in the tank was messed ups. all "stress" aside, what other causes could there be?
