fish death ....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive heard that pullign a fish out of the water can sometimes give it bloat and inflate its air bladder causing it to float upwards, also he couldve been trying as hard as he could to survive when you first put him in the tank thats hwy he seemd "ok" and then went belly up after he jsut couldnt take it anymore

Stress is usually the major casue for death, when you bring in wild caught fish. Some fish acclimate well, while others are overcome by the stress and are unable to recover.

tanks temp is about 78-80 degrees, which is within the natural range for largemouth bass. the body of water i took him from was prob about 65. however, the gradual introduction of tank water into his bucket should have combated that. this is the second bass this has happened to and i really do not want to waste the life of another fish until i can fix whatever the problem is.

just throwing this idea out there... but have you ever medicated your tank with any thing recently??? coz maybe theres some meds/chemicals in your water that wild caught fish aren't used to and the shock is whats killing them???

How long was the acclimation period?
I'm thinking ph shock.
I acclimate for 1 hour while adding about 15% tank water every 10 minutes.

I would think stress, even if there weren't any overt signs until it was too late. Stress is a really big deal and plenty of fish are hooked, look great and then promptly die when returned to the water. The air bladder suggestion is also valid, if he was down deep when you caught him he basically would've gotten fishy bends.
(I guess I gotta be that guy now) Another thing to consider before trying this again is that a 75g tank is far too small for a LMB. I don't know if you've got something larger set aside or not as these are the only posts I've seen from you but you should be looking at 3-400g minimum for an adult LMB.
