Some type of Pickerel and OD African pikes for me. I've got both and wouldnt rather anything else. All very cool and get along very well.
Pretty difficult to keep though. Wouldn’t recommend for everybody. I would recommend a clownfish though as a mustSeahorsesI've kept a few and had them spawn very fascinating experience.
There is a display at Two oceans aquarium in Cape town with over 100 captive bred clowns, they are super cute!Pretty difficult to keep though. Wouldn’t recommend for everybody. I would recommend a clownfish though as a must

I saw them the other day at my lfs. I was almost ready to start a reef tank when I saw them, since one of my best friends is trying to get me into it. Then I saw they were $125 each for 4-5” specimens, and I suddenly remembered why I don’t look too closely at the reef sections. They are expensive now would deter me personally from buying any. I had success by getting them on frozen Mysis Shrimp.
Expensive I’m not so sure. I see them for sale by local breeders for around $70-$140 each. They are a difficult fish to keep in the sense that they are demanding. If you have time to do a seahorse tank they will be for you. The biggest thing with seahorses is buying them from a reputable seller. Ideally one that is captive breeding them. Seahorses are a fish that often come in riddled with parasites/infections which leaves the buyer with little chance on keeping them. If you do seahorses you will be limited to a “species only” tank. They are not aggressive feeders and easily get out competed. The only thing I personally have had in a system with them was a mandarin goby. At that point it was basically a battle of the slow eating. Any other mid water fish will be far to aggressive. I fed them 3 times a day. A large protein skimmer is a must. Tank temp must be maintained below 74 degrees. Higher temps drastically increase infection rates. This makes a chiller almost necessary. Certain coral sting them so selective stocking is needed. Similarly to rays they are rather intolerant to ammonia levels. They are expensive now would deter me personally from buying any. I had success by getting them on frozen Mysis Shrimp.
That’s a beautiful aquarium. I was going to do something silimar with mine if I ever part with the tangs. Currently I have 4 clownfishOdoes are actually listed in my "Fishes of Southern Africa" book, unfortunately a bit too north for me to collect.HarleyK has bred them actually!
